About TeNeT • The Telecommunications and Networking Group (TeNeT) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras, India • Comprises of Faculty from the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Departments • Thus far have adopted the non-structured approach to incubation • Have incubated over 20 companies, 10 of which cater to rural technology needs • Last year, with the support of Infodev & DST established RTBI - IITM’s Rural Technology and Business Incubator

About RTBI • Design, pilot and incubate rural inclusive business ventures • Incubate entrepreneurs in a knowledge environment • Leverage Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for scaling • Mediate between urban enterprise and rural potential for development • 3 Startups : DesiCrew Solutions, InteliZon Energy, ROPE

Rural data bank Understanding Rural Space • Currently, data is being collected for households in approximately 120 villages across 7 districts in Tamil Nadu state • RTBI works along with Incubatees and supports them in:Village based Entrepreneur selection Determining socio-economic needs of the community or village Aid in the design of locally relevant products/services

Incubation Design Lessons • Computer based education and services is the initial attraction for Rural ICT Entrepreneurs to enter the incubation fold • Business models based on ICTs alone are not sufficient for successful entrepreneurship • Businesses become more sustainable if their core is community-centric and locally relevant • Building around prior domain knowledge enhances the entrepreneur’s staying power allowing creativity to creep into the business development process • Regional approach including geographic, socio-economic and cultural contexts for organic growth • Action research is necessary for project processes and goals to be continuously revised and aligned to the field
