  1. Grade 4, Chapter 6, Lesson 6Renaming Whole Numbers when Adding and Subtracting Fractions Add fractions to get mixed-number sums. Subtract fractions from whole numbers.

  2. Solve the following? What do you know about these problems? • = • 3 = • = ? • 2 =

  3. What do we do when we solve word problems? • Read the problem • What do I have to answer? • Re-read each sentence and draw the bar models, label the units. Adjust the bars as necessary. Place your question mark. • Check your diagram. • Write the equations to solve the problems, solve the problem • Check your answer. (Plug value back into the diagram. Check the arithmetic.)

  4. Warren and Drake each had an apple. Warren at of his apple and Drake ate of his apple. What fraction of the apples did they eat altogether?

  5. Find the sum of . • Write the equation this would represent? • What do you think will be a good estimate? Why? • Work with your partner and use the tape diagram strips to show the problem. • Show the arithmetic and solve the problem.

  6. Compare to the book • What are the steps we did to solve this problem? • Look at page 251 – what are the steps that are shown in the book. • What is alike? What is different? • Do the differences matter? Why do they work the same?

  7. Subtract fractions from whole numbers. Rosita had 3 pretzel rods. She ate 4/9 of one pretzel rod. What fraction of the pretzel rods are left?

  8. Compare the methods • What is the difference between these two methods? • Which method do you think is easier? Why? • Do you think both methods will always work for all problems? Why?
