The transport system w Tricity: • cars; • busess; • trams (in Gdańsk); • trolleybuses (in Gdynia); • commuter train (from Gdańsk to Wejherowo).
Cars There are 90 000 private cars registered in Gdańsk,Gdynia and Sopot together. The lowest rate of car ownership in the Tricity was in Gdynia - 350 cars per 1000 inhabitants.
Busses Passenger transport service: • more than 15 millions vehiclekilometers in Gdańsk, • 14 millions vehiclekilometers in Gdynia
Trams • Trams are only used in Gdańsk • Numbers of trams - 212 • The average age of trams – almost 23 years. • Length of tram’s routes – 117 km. • Passenger transport service –almost 12 millionsvehiclekilometers
Trolleybusses • Gdynia is one of the few European cities using the trolleybus network. • Trolleybuses have been in operation in Gdynia since 1943.
Trolleybusses • 84 trolleybuses operating on 11 routes carry more than 30 million passengers annually. • Low-floor vehicles make up 43% of the Gdynia trolleybus fleet.
Commuter train Szybka Kolej Miejska w Trójmieście (The Tricity Commuter Train Authority) is the main passenger carrier in the Tricity. The line connects Gdańsk and Wejherowo via Sopot, Gdynia, Rumia, and Reda. The number of passengers carried reached 37.7 million.
Commuter train The SKM fleet consists of electric units produced between 1961 and 2003. In order to improve journey comfort, they have been undergoing a steady modernization since 2004.
The main problem in public transport in Tricity: integration of the public transport in the whole Gdańsk conurbation.
Goals of integration in public transport: • make attractive conditions of travelling by public transport; • make possibility for cooperation for all operators of public transport.
Elements of integration in opinion of inhabitants: • common tariffsandticket’s system; • coordinated timetables, arrangement of routes; • information on bus/tram/trolleybus stops; • uniformed vehicle marking; • common colours of vehicle.
Elements of integration in opinion of municipalities: • tariffs; • tickets system; • distribuction; • timetables; • Information; • transportation research; • promotion; • modal split; • access to market; • adjustment of road traffic and control • organization of a road and rail hub; • regulations for passengers; • quality of the service of transport.
Bodies involved in integration: • Local authorities in Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot; • Local authorities of smaller cities and communities around Tricity; • Marshal of Pomorskie voivodeship; • The Tricity Commuter Train Authority (Szybka Kolej Miejska w Trójmieście).
Steps of integration of public transport in Tricity 1991 • First attempt to establish an association of the municipalities of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot and to set up a local public transport provider securing an integrated service in the area covered by the minicipalities. • Because of a political barrier (strong union opposition in one company) only Gdynia and five neighbouring municipalities was established ZKM Gdynia - local scale public transport integrator.
Steps of integration of public transport in Tricity 1996 • The second attempt was made by municipalities in Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot and SKM. They prepared feasibility study, in which e-ticket was identified as a tool to integrate fares and tickets of the local and regional transport services. • There was no agreement from trade union.
Steps of integration of public transport in Tricity 2000 • Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot and Wejherowo and SKM organised the tender for finding an operator for e-ticet’s system. • The project was temporarily abandoned because of fiscal differences between local public transport and SKM.
Steps of integration of public transport in Tricity 2003 • New initiative to integrate the local public transport and SKM was taken by president of region (Marshal) and the mayors of the municipalities. • The expert company (Arthur Andersen’s) said that the new Transport Association should provide all transport services in the Gdańk conurbation (including SKM). But because of fiscal problem it was not possible to integrate the fare and ticket systems (including SKM) by electronic card. • New opition - practical integration should based on paper ticket, as superstructure over the systems of ZKM Gdańsk, ZKM Gdynia, MZK Wejherowo and SKM.
Steps of integration of public transport in Tricity 2007 Second attempt of Marshal of Pomorskie voivodeship and final Metropolitalny Związek Komunikacyjny Zatoki Gdańskiej (Metropolitan Transport Association of Gdańsk Bay) – the organizator of public transport was formed as an organizer public transport in the whole Gdańsk agglomeration.

The main tasks of Metropolitan Transport Association of Gdańsk Bay- I step • Introducing a paper ticket, as superstructure over the systems of ZTM Gdańsk, ZKM Gdynia, MZK Wejherowo and SKM as a tool to integrate fares and tickets of the local and regional transport services. • Preparing tenders for contracting the operators companies.
The main tasks of Metropolitan Transport Association of Gdańsk Bay- II step • making decision of the tariff’s; • ticket’s distribution for urban public transport; • ticket´s control; • marketing research of urbantransport; • promotion of public transport; • information about the urban transport for passengers. • contracting the operators companies; • adjustment of road traffic and control of quantity and qualityof urban transport; • working out timetables; • carryon stop´s services; • calculate the range of subsidy.
We have first step now. Agglomeration’s paper tickets and e-tickets, as superstructure over the systems of ZTM Gdańsk, ZKM Gdynia, MZK Wejherowo and SKM are introduced.
ZKM Gdynia - local scale public transport integrator • ZKM Gdynia - local scale public transport integrator has been operated for fifteen years. • ZKM Gdynia organizes urban transport in 7 cities and communities. • ZKM Gdynia engages 8 operators, 3 municipal companies and 5 private companies.
The range of urban public transport in Gdynia In the year 2007 the volume of services achieved 19,245 milions vehiclekilometers in which 74% were buses’vkm and 26% were trolleybuses’vkm.
The modal split in Gdynia in 2002: • public transport: 55%; • private cars: 45%; in 2006: • public transport: 52%; • private cars: 48%;
The results of introducing competition into Gdynia´s urban transport system • percentage of default carriages dropped from 6 % in 1992 to less than 0.03 % in 2007; • percentage of buses and trolleybuses leaving stops before the scheduled time dropped from over 8 % in 1992 to 2 % in 2007.
The rating of quality of urban transport in Gdynia General rating of quality of the services (scale 2-5) in 2006 was 4,18. It grew by almost 20% from 1994. Year Grade 1994: 3,39 1996: 3,86 1998: 3,88 2000: 4,01 2002: 4,05 2006: 4,18
