  1. Monday 2-24-14 New SOS passes! • Fill out planner for the week • WU: Who Discovered the; • Nucleus • Electron • Return & Go over Force & Motion CBA • Update table of contents • Atomic Structure Notes • Subatomic Particles WS Put Periodic table in the VERY BACK of your journal (right before your formula Chart) SN Check next Week

  2. Electrons?

  3. Atomic Structure • After today’s notes you should be able to describe the structure of an atom including: • Mass • Subatomic Particles • Charge • Size • Locations I’m Democrotis. And I have no idea what you mean by subatomic particle.

  4. I told you so! Structure Of The Atom This is Gold. Gold is an element. An ELEMENT is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances under ordinary circumstances. This means that if you kept cutting it up into smaller and smaller pieces, like Democritus said, it will still be gold. The smallest piece you would be left with would be an atom of gold. An ATOM is the smallest unit, or piece, of an element.

  5. So you CAN cut water! Then its not an atom! Structure Of The Atom This is water. Water is not an element. (it’s a molecule.) Water can easily be broken down into smaller substances… …Hydrogen… …and Oxygen.

  6. Structure Of The Atom Back to gold… Gold is an element. The smallest piece of gold is called an atom of gold. Carbon is also an element. The smallest piece of carbon is an atom of carbon. Where could we find a list of 118 elements? Periodic Table !!! (Back of Journal)

  7. Structure Of The Atom Big deal! I could have discovered electrons if I had any arms! All atoms have two structures in common… …a nucleus made of protonsand neutrons… …and energy levels (or rings or clouds) containing the electrons. Electrons in the outermost level are called valence electrons and are used for bonding to make compounds. Who discovered the electron? J.J. Thomson

  8. Structure Of The Atom The nucleus can be broken down even further though, into its subatomic particles… …protons are charged particles in the nucleus with a mass of 1 amu (atomic mass unit)… positively …and neutrons are particles in the nucleus that have no charge & a mass of 1 amu… …and electrons are charged particles found in clouds around the nucleus with negligible mass. negatively The bigger the atom, the bigger the nucleus and the more clouds or levels it will have for the electrons.

  9. Name: Elliott Electron Description: Negative Favorite Activity: Racing around the arcade Name: Patty Proton Description: Positive Favorite Activity: Hanging out at the Nucleus Arcade Name: Nelda Neutron Description: Neutral Favorite Activity: Hanging out at the Nucleus Arcade

  10. 8 O Check out Oxygen’s periodic table entry. Oxygen 16 Structure Of The Atom The periodic table is a listing of every known atom discovered so far. Atomic Number Atomic Symbol Atomic Name Atomic Mass

  11. Structure Of The Atom The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom is known as the atomic number. Carbon has ___ protons. The atomic number of carbon is ___ . six six Oxygen has ____ protons. The atomic number of oxygen is _______. eight eight Gold has 79 protons. The atomic number of gold is what? The number of protons AND neutrons in the nucleus is called the atomic mass. The larger the atom, the more protons and neutrons, so the larger the atomic mass, too.

  12. Carbon was easy. They won’t all be that easy. Structure Of The Atom To find the number of neutrons in an atom, subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. Carbon has an atomic mass of 12 and an atomic number of 6… …this means that 12 (protons and neutrons) minus 6 (just protons)… …equals 6 neutrons. Good job. Hear me clapping for you? Of course not…cause I HAVE NO ARMS!!! 118

  13. Structure Of The Atom Find Gold on the periodic table. (Au for Aurum) Gold has an atomic mass of 197 and an atomic number of 79. That means there are 79 protons in the nucleus. How many neutrons are there in the nucleus of a gold atom? • 197 (p+ + n0 ) • 79 (p+) 118 (n0 ) 118

  14. 5.) 2.) 3.) + + - - 1.) 4.) Electron Energy Level Protons Nucleus Neutrons

  15. How about some helpful hints? There have to be some easy shortcuts. Structure Of The Atom Hint #1: In its atomic state, every atom has the same number of electronsas protons. Which means that not only does the atomic number tell you the number of protons, but also the number of electrons Hint #2: The period (row going across ) that the atom is in on the periodic table tells you how many electron levels or clouds the atom has. The element Seaborgium has an atomic number of 106 and is in period 7 of the periodic table. How many electrons does it have? How many energy levels?

  16. Structure Of The Atom Hint #3: Valence e- =Family or group number on Periodic Table How many valence e - will magnesium have? How many rings will magnesium have? How many protons will magnesium have? 12p+ How many neutrons will magnesium have? 12n0

  17. To Do Subatomic Particles Worksheet - use periodic table to determine protons, neutrons, electrons. RETESTING? -Tomorrow is the re-teach -Need to do corrections -Thursday is the retest
