  2. Public Policy • Difference in Problem between homework due and higher accident rates for teenagers. • If people don’t agree on solutions to a public problem, issues arise. • Government response to public issue is known as Public Policy.

Federalism • State and local governments create laws and services to meet the needs of their particular state, such as transportation, with assistance from the national government. • The policies set by state and local government often affect your life most directly. • Some problems are to big for individual states to solve.

Financing State Government • Taxes—states raise more than 50 % of their income from taxes. • Most states have two kindof taxes. • Most states also have income tax. • Sales Tax—charges mad on purchases of goods and services. • Excise Tax—a charge on certain goods, such as tobacco, alcohol, and gasoline.

State Executive Agencies • Examples of these are the department of health, Revenue, education, and Natural Resources. • The agency’s major responsibilities is to make sure the laws are carried out. • The agency’s also see that funds are spent as the law requires • Another important agency is the state transportation agency, which ensure the safe mobility of people and good within the state.

  13. Other Executive Officials • The Lieutenant governor is the state official second in rank to the governor. • The secretary of state is usually second or third in line of succession behind the governor and lieutenant Governor. • The Attorney General serves as the states chief legal officer.
