  2. James Madison James Madison was considered "The Father of the Constitution". He realized that one branch could not have complete control. "The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elected, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny." Therefore, the Constitution establishes a system of checks and balances to maintain balance within the US Government!

  3. The Constitution explains how our government is to be run. It says that it should have threebranches that have their own set of responsibilities and powers: The Legislative, The Executive&The Judicial.

  4. Legislative Branch There are 435 Representatives and 100 Senators. All together there are 535 members of Congress. 1. The Legislative Branch writes the bills.2. There are two groups of the Legislative Branch3. There are 100 senators and 435 representatives, a total of 535. 4. When the bill is written they need a simple majority to make it a law 5. When the representatives and senators meet together they are called the congress. 6. A senator serves 6 years. 7. A representative serves 2 years. 8. The Constitution got started in 1787. 9. The first ten Amendments are called The Bill of Rights 10. A bill has to go through the Congress to get to the President

  5. Executive Branch The Executive Branch of the Government has the President, Vice President, and all the cabinet members. The President is allowed to pass or veto a bill that the legislature sends him. 1. There have been 44 Presidents2. There are 14 Cabinet positions.3. Mount Rushmore depicts the faces of four of our former Presidents; George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.4. About 50 independent agencies are attached to this branch.5. There are nine offices or organizations directly responsible to the Chief Executive.6. Thomas Jefferson was the first President to be sworn into office in Washington, D.C.7. The President is responsible for appointing the cabinet.8. George Washington took his oath of office as the first President on April 30, 1789.9. There were three Presidents that had the last name of Roosevelt.10. President Theodore Roosevelt gave the "White House" its name in 1901.

  6. Judicial Branch The Judicial Branch is in charge of the court system. There are three different kinds of courts found in the federal court system: District Courts, Court of Appeals, & the Supreme Court. 1. The Supreme Court was set up by the Constitution.2. The Supreme Court was formally organized on February 2, 1790.3. The Supreme Court is in Washington D.C. 4. Various Court officers assist the Supreme Court in performance of its duties. 5. Of the approximate 4,500 cases appealed to the Supreme Court each year only about 200 are heard.6. The power of Judicial Review gives the Supreme Court the right to overturn state laws and laws passed by Congress.7. John Marshall of Virginia was appointed by President Adams as the fourth Chief Justice. He remained on the Court for over 34 years.8. There are 13 judicial circuits, each with a court of appeals.9. There are 94 U.S. district courts in the United States.10. Congress decides how many judges there will be and where they will work.
