  1. Cesarean Section Delivers a Healthy Baby? By Kaiyla Patrick

  2. What is a Cesarean Section? • According to thefreedictionary.com “A cesarean section is a surgical procedure in which incisions are made through a woman's abdomen and uterus to deliver her baby • About 25-30% of women will have an c-section • This means that 1 out 4 will have a c-section whether it is due to complications or because a mother request to have a c-section

  3. Why have a Cesarean Section? • Mother’s health • Baby’s health • Baby’s position (breech, oblique, transverse) • Fear of childbirth • Schedule baby’s birthday • Repeated C-sections

  4. health concerns? • From the Childbirth Connection website, there are four health concerns for a baby being born through c-section • Surgical cuts • Respiratory problems ( Apgar score) • Unable to breastfeed • Asthma • A study was conducted about c-sections and allergy disorders. It found that the mother’s vaginal tract held intestinal microbes that help build allergy immunities. C-section babies do not receive these benefits because they do not go through the vaginal tract

  5. What can be done? • “33 areas where cesarean section was found to involve more risk than vaginal birth, and 4 areas where vaginal birth was found to involve more risk than cesarean section.” • The best thing is to be educated and learn the pros and cons of surgery and vaginal delivery • If planning to have a c-section know the health issues that might affect your child in the long run • If you are not wanting to have c-section talk to your doctor about ways of preventing a c-section. • Remember the health of the baby and the mother are what matters
