Understanding Three-Dimensional Figures: Identification and Characteristics

DESCRIPTION

This guide explores three-dimensional figures, detailing how to identify and distinguish between prisms and pyramids. A three-dimensional figure occupies space and can consist of various shapes such as faces, edges, and vertices. Key definitions include faces (flat surfaces), edges (lines where two faces meet), and vertices (points where edges meet). The guide also covers key types of 3-D figures such as prisms (with rectangular bases) and pyramids (with triangular faces). It further examines other shapes like cones, cylinders, and spheres, helping learners grasp these geometric concepts.

  1. Solids: Three –Dimensional figures EQ: How do you identify various three-dimensional figures? How do you distinguish between prisms and pyramids?

  2. What are three-dimensional figures? • A three-dimensional figure encloses a part of space. • In other words it can hold something (water, air, etc.)

  3. Vertex Edge Faces Features of a 3-D figure • Face- the flat surface of a figure • Edge- formed by two faces of a 3-D figure sharing a side • Vertex (plural:vertices)- the point at which three or more edges meet

  4. 5 faces 8 edges 5 vertices 7 faces 15 edges 10 vertices Identify the number of faces, edges, and vertices on each three-dimensional figure. A. B. Faces + Vertices -2 = Edges

  5. 6 faces 12 edges 8 vertices 5 faces 9 edges 6 vertices Identify the number of faces, edges, and vertices on each three-dimensional figure. A. B.

  6. Prism: Has at least three faces that are rectangles Has two congruent faces on the top and bottom called bases The shape of the base tells what type of prism the figure is Pyramid: Has at least three faces that are triangles Has only one base The shape of the base tells what type of pyramid the figure is Two main types of 3-D Figures

  7. Prisms Rectangular Prism Pentagonal Prism

  8. Pyramids Square Pyramid Triangular Pyramid

  9. Other 3-D Figures • Cone- is a figure like a pyramid, but has a circular base and a curved surface

  10. Other 3-D Figures • Cylinder- a curved figure with two circular bases

  11. Other 3-D Figures • Sphere- a 3-D figure with no faces, bases, edges, or vertices

  12. Let’s PlayName that Figure!

  13. Cylinder

  14. Triangular Prism

  15. Cube

  16. Square Pyramid

  17. Okay…this last one is hard…Ready??

  18. Pentagonal Pyramid

  19. Polyhedron A 3-dimensional figure that has polygons as faces Polygons must have straight lines! Polyhedrons Not Polyhedrons
