  1. THE ROYAL FAMILY OF SWEDEN

  2. INTRODUCTION • The Swedish Royal Family since 1818 consists of a number of persons in the Swedish Royal House of Bernadotte, closely related to the King of Sweden. They are entitled to royal titles and style (manner of address), and some perform official engagements and ceremonial duties of state. The extended family of the King consists of other close relatives who are not royal. • Prior to 1818, the Swedish Royal Family was the House of Holstein-Gottorp, a cadet branch of the Oldenburg dynasty which ruled Sweden from 1457 to 1521 (then intermittently) and from 1751 until 1818. That dynasty's last legal pretender to the Swedish throne was Prince Gustav of Wasa (1799-1877) whose only son Lewis predeceased him in infancy in 1832.

  3. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden • Carl XVI Gustaf  is the reigning King of Sweden since 15 September 1973, succeeding his grandfather King Gustaf VI Adolf. He is the only son of the late Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten, who died in 1947, and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. •  Crown Princess Victoria, is the eldest child of the King and his wife, is Queen Silvia.

  4. Queen Silvia of Sweden • Queen Silvia Renate of Sweden ( born 23 December 1943 in Heidelberg) is the Queen consort of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Styled Her Majesty The Queen, Silvia is the mother of the heir apparent to the throne, Crown Princess Victoria.

  6. PRINCESS ESTELLE OF SWEDEN • Princess Estelle of Sweden, Duchess of Östergötland (Estelle Silvia Ewa Mary; born 23 February 2012) is the daughter and only child of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland.

  7. HISTORY • A Swedish royal family has been able to be identified as existent from as early as the 10th century A.D., but with more precise detail only being able to be added during the two or three centuries that followed. Historically confirmed monarchs are listed officially by the Swedish Royal Court. • Until the 1620s Swedish provinces were granted as territorial appanages to royal princes which, as dukes thereof, they governed semi-autonomously. Since then, these provincial dukedoms exist in the royal family only nominally, albeit each prince and princess traditionally maintains a special public connection to, and sometimes a secondary residence in, "his or her duchy". • The sons of Swedish kings have held the princely title as a rank of nobility, or as a courtesy title for an ex-dynast or, most often, as a royal dynast.

  8. THE SWEDISH ROYAL PALACE • The Stockholm Palace or the Royal Palaceis the official residence and major royal palace of the Swedish Monarch (the actual residence of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia is at Drottningholm Palace). Stockholm Palace is located on Stadsholmen ("city island"), in Gamla Stan (the old town) in the capital, Stockholm. It neighbours the Riksdag building and Stockholm Cathedral. • The offices of the King, the other members of the Swedish Royal Family, and the offices of the Royal Court of Sweden are located here. The palace is used for representative purposes by the King whilst performing his duties as the head of state.

  9. DROTTNINGHOLM PALACE • The Drottningholm Palace is the private residence of the Swedish royal family. It is located in Drottningholm. It is built on the island Lovön (in Ekerö Municipality of Stockholm County), and is one of Sweden's Royal Palaces. It was originally built in the late 16th century. It served as a residence of the Swedish royal court for most of the 18th century. Apart from being the private residence of the Swedish royal family, the palace is a popular tourist attraction. • It is a UN World Heritage Site.
