This research, led by Kelly Baerwaldt at USACE, utilized individually coded ultrasonic transmitters to track fish movement in the Upper Illinois Waterway/Chicago Area Waterway System. With 200 tags implanted in Asian carp and surrogate species, the study aimed to monitor proximity to electric barriers and assess navigation through lock structures. Key findings indicate no tagged fish crossed barriers, with extensive telemetry data supporting barrier effectiveness. Further detection enhancements are planned to improve monitoring accuracy.

MRRP Telemetry • Tagging of fish with individually coded ultrasonic transmitters in the Upper IWW/CAWS; • Acoustic network supplemented by a mobile hydrophone unit to collect information from tags (N=200) implanted into free-swimming Asian carp (bighead carp and silver carp) and surrogate species; • Purpose is to monitor fish movements in the immediate vicinity of the Barrier to determine if fish are able to challenge and/or penetrate the Barrier; if Asian carp are able to navigate through lock structures in the Upper IWW; and to determine the leading edge of Asian carp.
2011 Planned Effort 2010 Effort • 105 tags implanted into adult Asian carp and surrogate species (July - Nov 2010) • CSSC/Chicago River above Barrier: 20 common carp • Lockport Pool above Barrier: 18 common carp; 2 freshwater drum • Lockport Pool below Barrier: 29 common carp • Brandon Road pool: 1 grass carp; 1 smallmouth buffalo, 17 common carp • Dresden Island pool: 17 bighead carp • 60 tags into adult surrogate species (Lockport Pool) and Asian carp and surrogate species (Brandon Road Pool) • 5 tags into Asian carp in Dresden Island pool • 30 additional tags to be implanted into small fish (species TBD) in Lockport pool below and between the Barriers • 15 tags in spring (high water) • 15 tags in late summer (low water) • Mobile tracking 200 TAGS TOTAL 2.5 yr battery life Transmitter being implanted into Asian carp Transmitter size relative to size of Asian carp

Summary: Stationary Receivers • Data collected 21 July – 27 Oct 2010 • 621,091 detections • 54 tags detected • Single ‘hit’ data discarded • No tagged fish crossed Barriers
October Mobile Tracking Data • 41 Tags Detected • 4 days tracking • 7 tags detected by Mobile Tracking not detected by receivers
Barrier Receivers • Around Barrier = 519 detections (3 tags) • 3 common carp were detected in range of Barrier; all detected next day by downstream receivers • Two fish detected around Barrier in October; one in September • No evidence of Barrier breach Armored Receivers CSSC Barrier I Cal-Sag Barrier IIA Des Plaines River Barrier
Barrier Receivers • Need better detection resolution of fish at Barrier to determine EXACT location of fish in detection range • 2011: Procure four VR4 Receivers • Deploy for five years • Surface downloads (modem, no need to retrieve receivers) • Positioning data can determine EXACT location of fish, data is processed by Vemco • Pilot study in March; not available for retail until June
Summary • No tagged fish have crossed Barrier • 61 Tags detected July - Oct • CAWS: 61 out of 87 tags detected (70%) • 18 tags were implanted in Nov, not included in detection rate analysis • High rate detection considering open system and use of passive detection; more active detection to be used in 2011 • Lockport Pool Below Barrier: 29 out of 29 tags detected (100%) • New VR4 Receivers to be deployed June 2011 THANK YOU to ILDNR and USFWS for tagging and field assistance
