South African School System • Primary School – 7 years • High School – 5 years: Last year is known as the MATRIC year, short for ‘matriculaion into university’ • In High School, students are seperated into • HG – higher grade • SG – standard grade • LG – lower grade • You have to study hard in the Matric year in order to enter university. • There are no ‘vestibulares’ in South Africa. If you can’t enter University, you redo the Matric year or you can study at a TECHNICON (eg: Fatec) or Technical College (eg: Senai)

  25. Problems South Africa’s main problem is AIDS. 46.2% of patients are HIV + 15% of health workers are contaminated 10% of the population is HIV positive and around 600 people die per day of AIDS. The disease is mainly among the native African population. Reasons: - drugs - rape - unprotected sex in rural communities - lack of sterilization of hospital equipment - babies born with HIV
