  2. I.B. Extended Essays Students will pick a subject within one of the following groups . To find a complete list of allowable subjects, consult the I.B. Vade Mecum

  3. What is the Extended Essay? • The Extended Essay is a 4,000 word in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject. • It is a requirement for all Diploma candidates. • It is an opportunity to engage in independent research. • It is a chance to get bonus points towards the Diploma total. • It should take about 40 hours to complete.

Choice of Subject • Choose a subject that you enjoy. • You may choose any IB subject, but it is usually better to choose one that you are studying. • You may not write a Group 2 essay in a language you are studying as A1. (e.g. If you are studying Spanish A1, you may not write an extended essay in Spanish B)

  6. Choice of Supervisor • You will be assigned a mentor based on the subject that you choose.

  7. Choice of Topic • Your mentor may give you limited assistance. • The topic should allow you to collect information, analyze and evaluate in depth.

  8. The Research Question • Narrow the focus of the topic down to a research question or hypothesis • Get ideas from previous essays • Make sure that the question is challenging, but capable of being answered. • Keep referring back to the research question as you write the essay.

  13. More Advice • Avoid Plagiarism! Cite all of your reference material correctly! • Keep a list of all references from the beginning of your research. • Aim to be 90% finished by August of your 12th Grade year. • Meet the deadlines!
