  2. BASEBALL

  3. Spring Training • The Major League Baseball (MLB) season gets started with Spring Training, a month-long process whereby the players get back into shape after the off-season • All players report in February, with the pitchers and catchers reporting a week before the position players • It takes time for pitchers to build up their arm strength, which is why they report before the position players

  4. Regular Season • The regular season begins on March 31, and runs through the end of September • MLB has the longest regular season of any other major sports league • The Boston Red Sox won the World Series in 2013, and many consider them favourites to win again this season • Who is your favourite team?

  5. Canadian Baseball • The Toronto Blue Jays are currently the only MLB team located in Canada … but this wasn’t always the case • Do you know what the other Canadian baseball team was? Brett Lawrie, Canadian third baseman for the Blue Jays

  6. Montreal Expos • The Expos were the first Canadian MLB team, playing in Montreal from 1969 to 2004 • The Blue Jays are playing two exhibition games in Montreal on March 28 and 29 in Olympic Stadium, where the Expos used to play

Favourites to win? • The Miami Heat are considered the favourite to win the championship this year, although the Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and Oklahoma City Thunder are also considered title contenders • The MVP voting will likely come down to LeBron James and Kevin Durant, who plays for the Thunder

  17. Many fans and writers compare LeBron James to Michael Jordan, a former 4-time MVP himself • Jordan believes that, in his prime, he would have beat LeBron one-on-one

Stanley Cup Playoffs • The NHL Playoffs begin on April 16, right around the time the NBA Playoffs start • The championship team wins the Stanley Cup trophy, which was named after Frederick Arthur Stanley, a former Governor General of Canada • He said, "I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion of Canada.” • In 1926, the Stanley Cup became the championship trophy of the NHL
