  1. Conscience Ms McNamara

  2. Conscience • What is conscience? • Is it a little voice in our heads? • Are there different viewpoints on conscience?

  3. Conscience • Conscience tells us what is right and wrong. • Our conscience also relates to how we act on our judgement of right and wrong.

  4. Views on Conscience • A “voice” in our heads. • The feelings of guilt after we do something wrong. • A gift from God.

  5. Informed Conscience • Learning about moral issues, getting information and facts about right and wrong. • Developing our Conscience is a process that begins at childhood. • Catholic Conscience is guided by i) Jesus’ Teachings ii) Church Teachings iii) Prayer iv) Trustworthy people.

  6. Video Games and Morality

  7. Video Games • Are there a lot of decisions to be made in video games? • Do these decisions have consequences? • Can we examine these decisions in a moral aspect? • How would our conscience effect these decisions?

  8. Every action leads to something….. • For every decision you make in a video game, your character, progresses, gains skills, points, moves up levels, collects rare items etc. • If you wouldn’t behave like this in real life, why would you in a game? • Does this say anything about your conscience?

  9. Moral Decisions • In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, you can chose to shoot or not shoot civilians. • In Fable II you have the option to wear a halo or devil horns

  10. Continuity through Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 • You can make decisions throughout games 1 and 2, such as killing people that in later games you need to talk to. • You can help certain characters with challenges, each with a moral decision, and these will develop your relationship with these characters.

  11. Geth or Quarian?? • The Geth aren’t a natural life from. • The Quarian are a natural life from. • Unless you’ve made very specific decisions throughout the previous games, and enabled Legion and Tali to get along you have no option but to choose a race.

  12. Decision time… • Quarians hate the Geths (who they created). • Geths don’t hate the Quarians, they just fought in self defence. • Quarians know much about synthetic life and technology, the Geth would be an asset for your army. • Who do you chose??

  13. Who will you chose?

  14. Think about it…. • Why don’t the moral decisions you make in video games affect your conscience?
