  2. Our First Literary Memories Take a few minutes and jot down things you remember about learning to read.

  3. Literacy Intervention A Four Part Focus: • Word Work • Phonemic Awareness • Guided reading • Reading Comprehension

  4. Word Work Includes: • Sight word practice • Word families • Recognizing similarities and differences in words • Word comparisons: antonyms, synonyms, similes, etc

  5. Phonemic Awareness Includes: • Letter-sound association • Practice of vowel combinations • Digraphs • Consonant clusters • Rhyming

  6. Guided reading Includes: • Fluency • Accuracy • Expression • Strategies for unfamiliar words

  7. Reading Comprehension Includes: • Understanding literal and inferential meaning of a story read to them. • Understanding the literal and inferential meaning of a story they read themselves.

  8. Before Reading comes Talking ~Tell your child stories… …stories of when you were younger …stories of when they were younger …stories where they are the heroes ~Sing to your child… …sing old fashioned ballads …sing silly rhyming songs …sing songs and leave out the words…let them fill in the words ~Talk to your child… …talk to them about what you are doing and why you are doing it …talk to them about their favorites things …talk to them about books you are reading …talk to them about new and fabulous words

  9. Reading Itself… ~Comprehension The purpose of reading is to get meaning from text. ~Letter Sounds Each letter represents at least one sound ~Sight Words Some words we just need to remember from sight

  10. Homework… • Extension of things taught in school • Give you a chance to see what your child is learning • Gives your child extra practice at home • Teaches responsibility and organizational skills • Should only take a few minutes each night

  11. Beyond Homework Think of your day… How can we fit in Literacy Learning? ~driving home ~making supper ~homework time ~doing dishes/making lunches ~bath time ~bed time

Practical Ideas: ~In the vehicle… …books/books on tape …magnetic games ~In the bathroom… …sponge letters/soap sticks in the tub …magazines/comics in a basket ~Before supper… …magnetic letters on the fridge …small white board …read to me …help me with the directions ~At the supper table… … ‘How was your day?’ ~Bedtime… …Read!

  13. Beyond literacy… ~Expectations… …purpose for reading …providing a quiet place to concentrate for homework …sitting and listening …responsibility …you CAN do it!
