  3. 2011 Season Re-Cap • Excellent strides to rebuilding this program. • Saw a lot of positive things happening between players. • Saw the beginning of an identity being built. • Other coaches in league were surprised by what we were able to accomplish last season.

  4. 2012 Hopes of Coaching Staff • Selfless service. • No Academic issues during the season. • Buying into unity and loyalty. • Taking the “Cool Jackets Off”. • Trusting that the coaches have the team’s best interest in mind. • We are not coaching because we want to lose. • We will lead a horse to water, if they choose not to drink they will feel the effects, but we will not let it affect the rest of the program. • Team sport vs. looking out for only oneself. • We have pride in this school and what this program could be again. • We want to build a strong foundation and focus on the process; the results will come. • See more WORK and less WANT. • See the players create ideas they can commit to; cannot just be the coaches. • See player take ownership of themselves and to THEIR team.

  5. Expectations of coaching staff • Safety • Accountability • Follow Doctors orders • Build lifelong lessons • Playing a sport is like a part-time job. We will prepare girls for life outside of school and sports. • Be positive • Respect, we will give it to the girls as much as they give us. • Practice time is OUR time/Games are PLAYERS. • Treat everyone fairly, but not equally. • We will build a pyramid similar to Wooden’s pyramid of success • This is a process, we made steps last year in this rebuilding process, we WILL make MORE STEPS this year. • We need to focus on the process and not worry about the result. • We have been accumulating a better softball IQ, working on what we can control and that is our knowledge and how we teach skills. • We will give everyone our 100%, we expect the same. • This is our passion, we are not doing it for the fame, glory and certainly not the money.

  6. Our Pyramid of Success

  7. Coaches’ Vision

  8. Coaching Philosophy • Teach players life lessons through playing the game positively and with spirit by holding all members of the program accountable for their actions physically, mentally and emotionally. • Coaches will put players in a position to be successful • Our definition of success is based off of Coach John Wooden’s definition. • “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” • We work with a TEAM mentality • Team over Self • This game is not won by one person • Exhibit selflessness

  9. Coaching Philosophy • We hold our players to their team expectation sheet • We want to create an environment where people compete by pushing each other to get better • No spot will be given they must be earned, everyday. • If you were on a specific team last year, does not mean you are automatically on it this year. This can change throughout a season. • Everyone starts with a clean slate. • Competition will be positive when it is against fellow teammates. • No tearing people down. • Varsity will be more competitive skills taught as JV and C-Team will be more learning skills oriented. • JV and C-Teams are Tacoma Rainiers • We will build talent. • Leave no one behind.

  10. Coaching Philosophy • We will meet individually with the players • Self-evaluations will be made every three weeks • Goals will be reviewed by both player and coach • We will discuss what we see and what will help them get better with a hopeful open ear. • These are planned in the calendar and are mandatory • Student before Athlete • Academics are key to life. • Softball will take a back seat to any academic issue • Want to have the highest Team GPA in the Spring Sports • If you want to play in college and your grades are not as good as they can be, they will find someone to replace you who is doing their job.

  11. Coaching Philosophy • We are on a mission. We will have a vision for the season. • Team will create this mission before the season starts. • Players are expected to hold each other accountable. • We will create traditions that will help us on our mission.

  12. Coaching Philosophy • Open-Gym/Off-Season • Want to be better? Need to commit to working to be better. • Work is stronger than Want. • Offense: • Will be testing the arms of our opponents’ catchers on the base paths. • Will be better in short game by continuing to work on it during practice. Short game wins games. • We will manufacture runs as much as possible. • Win the Smash Zone • Each swing is gold, not just practice swings, competition swings

  13. Coaching Philosophy • Defense • Limit errors as much as possible by practicing those situations as much as we can in the limited time we have to do so. • Putting competition into play during practice to help players with stressful pressure situations in real games. • Play like we are in a tied ball game • 7 mini battles • Each out is gold

  14. Expectations of Players • Commitment • Family • School • Black Hills Fastpitch • Zero Tolerance for Bullying • Verbal • Electronically • Body Language • Punctuality • 1st time-extra duties • 2nd time-playing time • Read Players Expectation List • Respect everyone program • Communicate with staff • Follow BHHS athletic and academic codes of conduct • Team over Self! • Accountability to themselves and to their team. • If there is a bus, kids have to be on it • Spring Break-Mandatory • Not there, someone else will get a good looking at. • Just like a part time job, miss work then others pick up your hours. • Eliminate 80% of the work being done by 20%

  15. Lettering • Must have played in 20% of the innings • Must finish the season unless injured

  16. Expectations of Parents/Family • Release your kids to us. • Parents importance: • #1 child(ren) • #2 child(ren) • Coaches importance: • #1 Team • #2 Players • When to talk to Coaches • Daughter needs to speak with coaches first • After practice/24 hour period after game. • No Emails • Meetings with Don • Playing time and position issues: • Coaches will place player where they will be successful and help the whole team. • We will communicate with your daughter(s). • If they do not understand after our meeting then we will sit down with Don. • Please some out to practice • Limits • TEAM OVER SELF!
