  7. Management of IAG

  8. Matrix Standard • The Matrix standard – a national quality standard for any organisation delivering information, advice and/or guidance on learning and work. • Context – college, employer, careers service, learning centre, work based learning providers, recruitment agency, etc. • Organisations apply for the ‘standard’ which is reviewed every 2 years. Blackburn College has Matrix accreditation.

  9. Matrix / eg. - Delivery of Careers Education • Secondary Schools • Discrete careers education – often part of citizenship and PSHE programme; • Integrated careers education – taught as part of other subjects; • Extended provision – through special activities such as work experience.

Post 16 • Sixth Form Colleges – careers education as part of enrichment programme delivered outside student’s main programme. • FE Colleges – careers education • part of enrichment programme; • part of wider tutorial programme; • separate, free standing career events; • supported self study and independent work; • integrated in student’s main programme.

NEW IAG STANDARDS – Oct 08 • Quality Standards for Young People’s Information, Advice and Guidance • 12 quality statements each with evidence indicators against which performance can be assessed. • An entitlement for all young people to have impartial advice through their education and training;

  12. Partners - Local Authorities, Connexions Service, Learning Providers, and Voluntary and Community Service organisations; • Local Authorities are responsibility for the delivery of the Standards; • From 2010, Local Authorities will commission and manage all IAG services.

Definition • ‘Information, advice and guidance’ covers a range of activities and interventions that help and support young people to be more self-reliant and better able to manage their personal and career development, including learning” • IAG is a key element of the Local Authority’s integrated youth support services;

  14. IAG – Key Components • Learning and career opportunities; • Progression routes; • How to access help and advice • Provision of activities that help young people to make choices; • Help to resolve conflicts, confront barriers and develop new perspectives and make progress.

  15. IAG /Legislation • Every Child Matters / Safeguarding: • 5 Key Statements - • Be Healthy • Stay Safe • Enjoy and Achieve • Make a positive contribution • Achieve economic well-being • Inspected by Ofsted

  16. Blackburn CollegeRetention Strategies • Attendance Monitoring • Late register • Tutorials • MIS Reports • Letters to parents • Meetings with parents / employers / external agencies

  17. Curriculum • Formal review of individual student progress (3 per year) • Study off/on campus • Mentoring • Learning Support • In class / Out of class – specialist support. • Events/Trips/ Incentives • Vouchers for improved attendance, behaviour and progress. • Reward ‘trips and visits’

Parental Contact • Letter and/or meeting • Including Support Worker / Key Worker • External Agencies • Youth Offending Team • Social Worker / Children in Care, etc. • Progression Activities / Monitoring • May/June = taster activities to improve progression opportunities • Frequent monitoring of student destinations.

Learning Outcomes - ‘RESCUE’ Koning Willem I College Blackburn College – new developments to reduce dropout • Success Class for dropout: • Internship with FE and HE students – eg E&D topics. • Appointed one member of staff to provide IAG for those who drop out and also liaise with local partners. Early evidence shows high level of demand and some success with re-engaging. • Establishing ‘internship’ opportunities – Jan 2010.

  21. 2009/2010 IAG Objectives • Work with local authority to implement new model for IAG; • To increase IAG and support to apprentices and work based learners • To increase transition from Level 3 to Level 4; • To continue to develop strategies to reduce drop out from education.
