  7. Figurative Language • Metaphor isa part of speech that is expressed by comparing two things, saying that one was or is the other. It’s a comparison of two things that does not use as or like. It is effective because of the direct way that it communicates a message. • An example of a metaphor is: That essay was a breeze. • A simile is also a good way to compare two things. They are similar to metaphors, but instead of using was or is, you would use like or as. • An example of a simile is: His nose leaked like the kitchen faucet. • Onomatopoeia is a word that describes sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to. • An example of onomatopoeia is: The tick-tock of the clock kept me up all night. • Personification, simply put, allows you to apply inanimate objects and abstract ideas with person-like features or actions. • An example of personification is: The year raced by me in a blur. • Alliteration is a literary style that utilizes the same letter or sound in a row or string of words. • An example of alliteration is: Ralph’s reindeer rose rapidly and ran around the room. • An idiom is a phrase that means something different than its literal meaning. • An example of an idiom is: The phrase, “Throw in the towel”, doesn’t actually mean that you have to throw in a towel, it just means that you are giving up

  9. Vocabulary • Apparent (adj) Easy to see or understand; clear. Based on the storm clouds blowing through, it was apparentthat it was going to rain. • Awkward (adj) 1. Not graceful. Bob is an awkwardguy and bumps into things a lot. • 2. Weird or hard to handle. The party was really awkward; nobody talked the whole time. • Competition (noun) 1. Trying to outdo others. • There is a lot of competitionbetween Kala and her sister; they’re always bragging about who is the better dancer. • 2. A game or contest. Keith entered the rock band competitionwith his all-tuba band. • Congratulate (verb) To express joy for a person’s success or good fortune. Mr. Toobin congratulated the class on winning the playwriting competition. • Dusk (noun) The time at the end of the day just before dark; the evening. It was dusk, and the ducks were flying home to go to sleep. • Instant (noun) A moment; a very short period of time. Leonelpaused for an instantand then jumped off the rock into the water. • (adj) Quick; without much delay. I love the taste of instantoatmeal, and it’s so easy to make. • Limb (noun) An arm, leg, wing, or branch. Using his long limbs, Jerry lifted himself from one tree limbto another. • Queasy (adj) Feeling sick to the stomach. Yuck! Smelling pig guts makes me so queasy. • Represent (verb) To stand in for something or someone else. As the class president, I get to go to an academic fair in Boston and represent my school. • Weary (adj) Feeling tired or worn out from hard work; exhausted.
