  20. MEAN EFFECTIVE PRESSURE (BMEP) • BMEP is the highesteverachieved by a naturally-aspiratedengine for a road car

  21. COMPRESSION RATIO • Compression ratio ishigherthan on anyotherroad-goinggasoline engine

  22. EFFICIENCY • Overallefficiencymay be measured by the ratio between: certified NEDC CO2emissions and: maximum power … whichisfurtherimproved on the 458 Speciale.

  23. THERMAL EFFICIENCY • Compression ratio hasbeenincreasedfrom12.5:1 to 14:1 to improvethermalefficiency Da Heywood, J.B., InternalCombustion Engine Fundamentals, McGraw Hill, 1988, pag. 170

  24. THERMAL EFFICIENCY • Compression ratio increase: howwe made it work • Extensiveknowledgeof the combustionchamber: the shapehasbeenoptimized to improve the flamevelocity • Mixturepreparation and CombustionModelshavebeenfurtherdeveloped and wellcalibrated • Ionsensingcombustionmonitoringsystemhasbeenimproved with new strategies

  25. COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY • Specific coils and a dedicated CPU monitor the combustionevent in eachcylinder. Ignition and injectioncalibrations are optimized in real time, cylinder by cylinder, according to the actualoperatingconditions. Knockevent Engine Control Unit Regulation of the sparkadvance Pressure trace Ioncurrent

  26. COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY • The pressure in the combustionchamberisincreased (+10bar at wide open throttle) +10 bar

  27. VOLUMETRIC EFFICIENCY • The intake runnersfeature a new geometry (shorterducts) for better performance at high revs. • The intake ports(inside the cylinder head) feature a new geometry to increase the flow coefficient (+5%) especiallywith high valve lift. +5%

  28. VOLUMETRIC EFFICIENCY • New camprofiles for higher valve lift

  29. VOLUMETRIC EFFICIENCY • New silencers design with tailpipes in side position due to aerodynamicrequirements and reduction of back pressure (up to -25%). -25% rpm

  33. PERFORMANCE COMPARISON: 458 SPECIALE VS 430 SCUDERIA

  34. FERRARI FOUNDRY (Light Alloy Technologies Area)

  35. ATLL 1954 to TODAY 1954 • Ferrari Foundrywasbuilt to produce high quality Al and Mg castings for the Scuderia’s racingcars • Ferrari Foundrywasupgraded and extended to cope with demand from the GT production car side of the business 1993 • Ferrari Foundrywasmovedto the currentfacility, havingpreviouslybeenlocatedin the area nowhousing the Ferrari Classiche division Today • Ferrari Foundryproduces Al-Si alloycastings for Ferrari GT and F1 engines and chassis

  36. ATLL STATISTICS - PRODUCT • 20 Castings for ferrari engines (v8 and v12) • 11 Castings for maserati engines (v6 and v8) INDUSTRIAL CASTINGS TEAM SPECIAL CASTINGS TEAM • Castings for f1 racingdivision • Castingsfor prototypecars

  37. ATLL PRODUCTION FLOW Shell Mould Sand Mould Casting Cores MeltingFurnaces Sand removalFinishingHeat treatment Controls Delivery of castings

  38. MOULD MAKING – CORES • “Cores”are sandpatterns (made by hardening the sandusingspecific binders and procedures) which, once insertedinto the sand or shellmould, create cavities or parts of the component thatcouldnototherwise be obtained.

  39. MOULD MAKING – MOULDS • The “mould”is the sand pattern intowhich the molten metal ispoured, and is the negative form of the casting wewant to produce. • The sandisused to makeboth the moulds and the cores.

  40. CASTING PRODUCTION–SHELL MOULD CASTING • The “shell”is a permanentsteelmouldintowhich the liquidaluminumispoured. In our case, itwould be more accurate to refer to the shellsassemi-permanent, however, astheyalsocontaintemporarysandcores. • Shell mould casting production is a processthatensures a defect-free product, thanks to the meticulous control of a multitude of factors

  41. CASTING PRODUCTION–SAND CASTING • The “sandmould”is made only of sand and resins and consists of the mould and cores. • Thisprocessinvolves the loss of the mould: every time liquidaluminumispouredinto a sandmould, ithas to be destroyed to extract the casting

  42. HEAT TREATMENTS Controls – Laboratory Area / Product Conformity • Aluminiumcastings are heat-treatedto achievemaximum mechanicalcharacteristics. • Varioustypes of heat treatment are used in ATLL to obtaindifferentcharacteristics on the basis of design requirements. • The followingcontrols are carried out in this area: • Visual inspection • X-ray • Dimensional • Chemicalcomposition and densityof the aluminium • Sand characteristicstests • Mechanicalcharacteristics of castings
