  1. Think About This… • In your science journal, think about the following question: • What are some things that meteorologists look at to collect data?

  2. Weather Data and Instruments

  3. Temperature • Degrees warm or cold; influenced by cloud cover.

  4. Wind • Horizontally moving air.

  5. Winds speed • The rate of the motion of the air on a unit of timing.

  6. Wind Direction • The direction from which the wind id blowing.

  7. Air pressure • The weight of air pressing down on earth.

  8. Humidity • The amount of water vapor in the air.

  9. Precipitation • Form of water that falls from a cloud to the Earth; a water cycle process; rain, sleet, hail, snow.

  10. Rain • Liquid precipitation in the form of water drops that falls from clouds.

  11. Sleet • Solid precipitation in the form of ice pellets form when raindrops, originating in warmer air aloft, freeze as they fall through subfreezing air new the surface of the Earth.

  12. Snow • Precipitation that is composed of white ice crystals falling from clouds. Snow may stick together to form snowflakes, which have a hexagonal or six-sided shape.

  13. Hail • Precipitation in the form of balls or irregular lumps of ice.

  14. Think About This… • In your science notebook, answer the following question: • What are some instruments or tools that meteorologists could use to collect weather data?

  15. Thermometer • Instrument used to measure temperature (degrees of Fahrenheit and Celsius).

  16. Anemometer • Instrument used to measure wind speed (in miles per hour or mph).

  17. Wind Vane • Instrument used to measure wind direction (points into the wind).

  18. Rain Gauge • Instrument used to measure amount of rain over a specific period of time (recorded in hundredths of inches).

  19. Hygrometer • Instrument used to measure humidity.

  20. Barometer • Instrument used to measure air pressure.
