Mission of the universities in the Slovak Republic • To develop harmonic personality, knowledge, wisdom, good and creativity in a human. • To contribute to the development of education, science, culture and health for the common wealth of the whole society. • To contribute to the development of knowledge society.

Introduction The University of Zilina is an educational and research institution with a broad profile in many areas of science, technology, economics, management and also educational and natural sciences. Innovations are important factor of quality assurance and internationalization contribute to increasing worldwide cooperation for innovation and development.

Innovation and internationalization of higher education at the University of Zilina • Project: Innovation and Internationalization of Higher Education – Tools of Quality Improvement at the University of Zilina in the European Higher Education. • Supported by resources from the European Social Fund • within the Operational Programme Education. • Design of new study programmes: • - Security and protection of critical infrastructure. • - Autotronics.

Innovation and internationalization of higher education at the University of Zilina • The specific aims of the mentioned project are oriented on: • Support of the quality of education at the University of Zilina through innovative forms, attractive study materials and rationalization of study programmes. • Increase participation of the University of Zilina in international cooperation through support of mobility of teachers and students and introducing common study programmes.

Innovation and internationalization of higher education at the University of Zilina • Project activities: • Creation of attractive study materials based on the information and communication tools. • Preparation of new study materials and pilot implementation of new conception of their creation. • Design and innovation of study programmes with focus on the needs of the labour market and knowledge society. • Support of international mobility of teachers and students. • Cooperation with foreign universities and preparation of common study programmes.

Innovation and internationalization of higher education at the University of Zilina • Project outputs: • Digitallibraryof the reusable educational objects. • Creation of publications and study materials. • Accredited study programmes and innovated accreditation documents. • Electronic support of the process of mobility of the teachers and students. • Design and delivery of minimum one common study programme in cooperation with foreign university

Design and innovation of study programmes with emphasis on labour market needs and knowledge society • Process of creatingaccreditation documents of study programme: • Justification of study programme. • Characteristics of study programme. • Corpus of study programme involving determination of knowledge core obtained by the graduate of study programme. Determination of knowledge core includes principal and other topics of study programme knowledge core. • Premises, material, technical and information resources necessary for realizing study programme. • Human resources data. • Study plans of study programme. • Graduate profile and his self-assertion. • Information letters of graduates.

Conclusions The important aspect of design and delivery of new or innovated study programme is involving employers and labour market institutions that contribute to including practical experience in courses and so they help to attune study programme to current and emerging labour market needs and foster employability and entrepreneurship.
