  14. The National Assembly gets to work August 1789: Declaration of the Rights of Man & Citizen “liberty, equality, fraternity” 1. Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions may be founded only upon the general good. 2. The aim of all political association is the preservation of the natural and imprescriptible rights of man. These rights are liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression.

  22. The Terror September 1793: Robespierre & Committee of Public Safety. Revolutionary Tribunal Guillotine -> 17,000 300,000 arrested

  23. The Reign of Terror ends July 1794: Robespierre executed. The Terror is over.

  24. New government August 1795: new constitution adopted, the Directory formed.
