  2. CNCS Mission Engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service in service to meet community needs. Each year, more than 1.5 million individuals of all ages and backgrounds help meet local needs through a wide array of service opportunities.

Senior Corps • Taps the skills, talents, and experience of nearly 500,000 Americans age 55 and over to meet a wide range of community challenges • Created in mid 1960s and early 1970s • Three (3) programs: • Foster Grandparents • Senior Companions • RSVP • VA – 26 projects in 1,247 service locations with 8,633 participants/volunteers

Foster Grandparent Program • Volunteers/”Grandparents” are 55 and older • Provide loving and experienced tutors and mentors to children and youth with special needs • Work one-on-one with children; serve 15 to 40 hours per week • Review schoolwork, reinforce values, teach reading, maintain relationships with children • VA – 4 projects in 147 locations with 399 participants

Senior Companions • Volunteers must be 55 and older • Help frail seniors and other adults maintain independence primarily in their own home • Serve between 15 and 40 hours per week • Assist with daily living tasks such as grocery shopping and bill paying, provide friendship and companionship; provide respite to family caregivers; meal preparation and light housekeeping • VA – 3 projects in 32 service locations with 231 participants

Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) • Largest senior volunteer organization in the nation • Engages more than 400,000 people age 55 and older in diverse range of volunteer activities • Volunteers serve 1 to 40 hours per week • 741 projects nationwide; 61,500 organizations supported • Provide independent living services; recruit and manage other volunteers; stock and maintain food pantries; prepare tax returns for elderly; tutor children; • VA – 19 projects in 1,068 locations with 8,003 participants/volunteers

  9. AmeriCorps Programs • AmeriCorps State – managed by VA Office of Volunteerism and Community Service • AmeriCorps VISTA – managed by CNCS VA State Office • National Civilian Community Corps & FEMA Corps – managed by one of 5 CNCS Regional Offices

AmeriCorps State • Provides service opportunities for participants (referred to as members) to serve their communities and to meet urgent local needs. • Subrecipient organizations are responsible for recruiting, selecting, and supervising AmeriCorps members to serve in their program. • VA has 41 AmeriCorps State (23) and National projects (18) in 117 locations with 596 Members

AmeriCorps VISTA • VISTA members tap the skills, talents and passion of more than 7,000 Americans annually to support community efforts to overcome poverty • VISTA members commit to a year of full time service to help build the capacity in nonprofit organizations, local governments, faith-based organizations, universities to fight poverty • Last year there were 1,132 VISTA projects across the nation • VA has 24 projects in 31 locations with 116 Members

Core Principles of AmeriCorps VISTA • Anti-Poverty Focus • Projects designed to alleviate poverty • Community Empowerment • Project sponsors involve residents of the community in planning, developing, and implementing the project • Capacity Building • VISTAs strengthen organizations by building infrastructure, expanding community partnerships, securing long-term resources, coordinating training • Sustainable Solutions • VISTAs serve as short-term resources to help organizations achieve lasting solutions to poverty.

AmeriCorps*State and VISTA Members Benefits • Living allowance – approx $11,000-$15,000/yr • Pre and in-service training • Deferment of student loans (if approved by lender) • Medical services for members (full time only) • End of service options: • $5645 education award (completion of designated hours or year of service) • $1500 stipend (VISTA only) • Child care, if eligible • Ethic of service and civic engagement

AmeriCorps*State AmeriCorps*VISTA • Direct services, such as: • Tutoring/mentoring • students • Teaching computer skills • Assisting with job • placement • Teaching conflict • resolution or financial • literacy classes • Building or rehabilitating • homes (Habitat for • Humanity) • Assisting crime victims • Indirect services, such as: • Create new systems and business processes (technology, performance management, etc) • Conducting outreach and feasibility studies • Developing community • partnerships • Developing volunteer management systems • Creating systems for resource mobilization

NCCC • AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) strengthens communities and develops leaders through direct, team-based national and community service. • In partnership with non-profits—secular and faith based—local municipalities, state governments, federal government, national and state parks, Indian tribes, and schools, members complete service projects throughout the region they are assigned.

  17. FEMA Corps • To strengthen the nation’s disaster response capacity, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Corporation for National and Community Service have established FEMA Corps, a unit of 1,600 service corps members within AmeriCorps NCCC solely devoted to disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery.
