  1. Warm Up May 8, 2013 • The star, Betelgeuse has a diameter of 420 million kilometers. How many times larger is this than the sun, which has a diameter of 1.4 million kilometers?

  2. Agenda • Warm Up/HW Check • Correct HW • 15.2 Notes: “Stars” • Bill Nye “Outer Space” • Cool Down

  3. 15.2 Stars • Constellations – groups of stars that only form those particular patterns when viewed from earth. • These stars are not at all related or close together – they just look that way to us

  4. Classifying Stars • All stars are balls of gas (mostly hydrogen) that undergo nuclear fusion to give off energy. • Ways of classifying stars: • Color/Temperature • Size • Composition • Brightness

  5. Color • Reddish – around 3,200 degrees Celsius (ex: Betelgeuse) • Yellowish – around 5,500 degrees Celsius (ex: sun) • Blueish – over 20,000 degrees Celsius (ex: Rigel)

  6. Size • Our sun is a medium sized star Prepared to be amazed!

  7. Chemical Composition • Different atoms give off different colored light when their electrons move around. • Flame Test Demo!!!

  8. Brightness • Brightness depends on size and temperature. • Apparent brightness – brightness as seen from earth • Absolute brightness/Luminosity – brightness compared to other stars if they were the same distance from earth.

  9. Light-Years • Distance light travels in one earth year. • About 9.5 trillion km!!

  10. Parallax • We use property called parallax to measure how far away stars are. • Parallax – apparent movement when you look from 2 different positions Thumb Demo

  11. Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram What is unusual about this graph? • Temperature vs. Brightness • Used to classify stars

  12. Cool Down • Title: Ways to Classify Stars Tree Map • 15.2 Vocab Booklet (8 words) • P. 605 #1a-c, #2a-c, #3a-c Homework
