  2. Reading Assignment Required Reading: Second Life: The Official Guide by Michael Rymaszewski, Wagner James Au, Cory Ondrejka, and Richard Platel Week 1: Read Chapter One before beginning Second Life program. Use book as a guide throughout term.

  3. Lesson 1 • Much to do this first week, so plan accordingly. • Decide on a username for your avatar. • Make sure you have the required speed and are using a wired connection on your computer. • Take time and download the Second Life program. • Record your username and password, as you will need to use it repeatedly. • First you will visit Welcome Island. Go slowly through the steps and enjoy the flying lessons. • 1st Assignment requirement: Take a picture of your avatar on Welcome Island with the aquarium in the background. Record your first impressions of Second Life and your avatar (around a paragraph).

Lesson 2 • Log in to Second Life • Use the Destination Guide to Search for San Jose State University • Teleport to San Jose State University by opening the globe icon • Add SJSU to list of favorite places • Meet with other students in your class. Add as friends using the people icon/tab. • Invite friends to meet at Imagination Island. • Assignment #2: Take snapshot of you and your new friends in front of Imagination Library, in Secret Garden or in Rachelville. Record your experiences in journal.

Lesson 3 • Log in to Second Life • Search for locations selling clothing, shoes and teleport to that location. • Add some new clothes and/or shoes to your inventory using the suitcase icon. • Help your friends and/or ask for help from friends to accomplish this task. • Optional: Add new hair, new skin, new bodies to your inventory. • Wear your new purchases by locating items in your inventory. • Assignment #3: Take a snapshot of your group with new clothing. Record your feelings about new appearance in journal.

Lesson 4 • Log in to Second Life • Click on Events tab by clicking on globe icon. • View the most recent Events (in Pacific Time Zone) or Search for future events for either Valentine’s Day parties (Spring Term) or events for Halloween (Fall Term) • Invite group to your event. Decide on event as a group to photograph. Take photo and turn in one photo per group of all group members in attendance. • Assignment #4: Turn in photo and short description of event. Log progress in journal. • Take stock of any unresolved issues and add questions to discussion board for class.

Lesson 5 • Log in to Second Life • Search for Role-playing environments • Communicate with group (via Elluminate or email) and vote on which role-playing environment to visit. • Meet with group in a role-playing environment. (For ex. Ambrea, Pirate Jabberwock, or a Western environment). • Find out how to add period clothing, if possible, from your chosen environment. Then take group photo. • Assignment #5: Turn in photo and 1 page paper on your experience so far in SL and think of how SL can be helpful to your library or the type of library you’d like to work in. (Add a copy to your journal.)

  8. Lesson 6 • Log in to Second Life • This week you have two choices. As a group you may either attend another role-playing event or attend a different type of event. • Record when and where to meet. Take group photo and turn in individual summary of event. • *If possible, provide navigation numbers of where you visited. • Practice flying in Second Life after event. Take photo of group flying around. • Assignment #6: Turn in two photos (event and flying) and record in journal your experiences.

  9. Lesson 7 • Log in to Second Life • Search for Renaissance type free clothing. Add to inventory. • Wear your new clothing. • Meet group on Renaissance Island at pre-determined time. • Try to attend Renaissance event. Minimum: take photo of group on Renaissance Island. • Assignment #7: Turn in photo and describe event attended. Record in journal.

  10. Lesson 8 • Log in to Second Life • Visit Imagination Island. • Attend reading event decided on as a group (may require more than one login). • Take photo after reading event in front of library. • Assignment #8: Turn in photo and describe event. Record in journal.

  11. Lesson 9 • Decide as a group what type of event to host. Plan event and invite students and library professionals via group SLIS email. Email instructor plan for event (could be as simple as each member reading a line of poetry). Instructor will make sure events are at different times via D2L. Record experience in journal. • Add to portfolio.

  12. Suggestions • Let groups continue to role-play and record their experiences and take photos in a linear format. Such as continue the term as a member of Ambrea and invite other students to experience one part or event in Ambrea as culmination of project. • OR • Let groups experience Second Life on their own or as a tour guide to various events and destinations. Use photos as proof of attendance at various events.
