  1. There are five Regions in the US Southeast

  2. Use the Map • The nation’s largest city, New York City, is located in what region? NORTHEAST • California is located in what region? WEST • Two of the nation’s largest port cities, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana, are located in what region? SOUTHWEST We divide our country into regions because it is easier to study the country’s geography!

  3. The American People • The United States has a motto, “E Pluribus Unum”. • This stands for “Out of many, one.” • This is a good motto for the US because there are many different people in one united country. This is the Great Seal of the United States. Why do you think it was designed with stars just above the motto E Pluribus Unum?

  4. I Pledge Allegiance… • The Pledge of Allegiance helps unite many different people who live in the US. • The Pledge tells Americans that they believe in freedom and fairness for all people. • We Pledge allegiance to two things: The flag and to the republic.

  5. Government by the People! • The US is a democracy which means the people have the power to make decisions about the government. • Citizens (that’s you!!) are members of a country. We play the most important role in our government! • Our government is based on the ideals of freedom for all, equal rights for all, and to be represented fairly.

  6. Free Enterprise • Free enterprise gives Americans three freedoms: 1. Start your own business, 2. Own private property, and 3. Choose what to sell and for how much. • A person who starts a new business in hopes to make a profit is called an entrepreneur.

  7. A Land Rich in Resources! • The US has many natural resources such as soil, trees, water, plants, fossil fuels, minerals, and more. • Some resources are renewable (trees) while others are nonrenewable (oil). Even animals can become nonrenewable! • We need to protect our environment through eliminating and reducing pollution, and also conserving and protecting our natural resources!

  8. Our National Parks • Look what Theodore Roosevelt had to say about protecting our environment in 1883: • “It is also vandalism…to destroy or to permit the destruction of what is beautiful in nature, whether it be a cliff, a forest, or a species of mammal or bird. Here in the United States we turn our rivers and streams into sewers and dumping-grounds, we pollute the air, we destroy forests, and exterminate fishes, birds and mammals.” Do you agree or disagree? Why? • National Parks protect precious land, animals, and our environment!

  9. Protecting our Environment • This painting shows a cougar drinking clean, unpolluted water. Unfortunately cougars are currently endangered of becoming extinct! • How many natural resources can you find in this painting that need to be conserved and protected?

  10. Our Land is Alive! (personification!!!) • Our land and country is wonderful. • Think About it… • What makes the United States a good country to live? • Think of our government, our national parks, our freedoms, and the American people 
