  1. “At least 31 people presumed dead on erupting Japanese volcano”

  2. Mount Ontake, the second tallest volcano in Japan, after Mount Fuji, is a popular destination for hikers, especially in the fall when the foliage's rich autumn colors are on display. While an estimated 200-250 hikers were taking in the sites, Mount Ontake erupted for the first time in more than 35 years. At least 31 people are presumed dead after rescuers found them showing no signs of life near the summit. Rescue teams had begun searching for dozens of climbers who were caught by the sudden eruption. The volcano in central Japan unleashed a huge cloud of ash late Saturday morning that billowed down the mountainside and engulfed hikers in its path. Witnesses described hearing a sound like thunder when the eruption began. The Japan Meteorological Agency has raised the Volcanic Alert Level from 1 to 3. That means the public is advised to not approach the volcano. The agency warned that another large eruption could take place in the next six days or so.

  3. In Other News It's more expensive than ever to get your hands on your own money. A customer is slapped with fees when they use an ATM that's not owned by their bank, and those fees jumped 5% in the past year, according to Bankrate. On average, a customer is charged a total of $4.35 for each transaction. People are getting smarter and avoiding out-of-network ATMs as much as they can, said Bankrate's chief financial analyst Greg McBride. But that's part of the problem. Banks are hiking fees to make up for the loss. Against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter recorded the 3,465th—and final—hit of his 20-year career. Jeter knocked in a run on an infield single against Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz in the third inning. And with that, his legendary career was over. Yankees manager Joe Girardi waited for word from Jeter as to whether The Captain wanted to call it a career at that point. Once Jeter signaled that he was done, Girardi sent Brian McCann in to pinch run at first base. Jeter received a standing ovation from the Fenway Park crowd and both dugouts. As he left the field, Jeter acknowledged everyone in the ballpark with a tip of the cap.
