  1. CXC Manager’s Status Report Chandra User Committee Meeting Roger J. Brissenden 25 June 2002

  2. Program Level Status • Spacecraft continues to perform superbly and operations continue to be routine. No significant spacecraft hardware problems or safe modes have occurred since last report. • Flight software patch to mitigate EPHIN hardware failure flag glitch running SCS 107. • 827 Cycle 4 proposals (817 GO, 10 GTO) submitted by deadline of 3/15/02. Peer Review held on schedule June 18-20. • Plan agreed to with MSFC and HQ on adding resources in the Ed/Outreach area to provide additional emphasis on SSUs. • CXC Quarterly review 4/23/02. No major actions resulted from the review. MSFC Independent Annual Review to be held 9/5/02. • Contract change in work to direct SAO to perform call for proposals in place of NRA – similar to HST model. • CXC Contract extension proposal for 11-months from 9/30/02 to 8/31/03 in final sign-off with MSFC. • MSFC is pursuing a JOFOC approach for contract post 8/31/03. Second 5-year budget level briefing given to HQ as part of POP-02. • No significant near-team budget or staffing issues. Out-year profile in work with HQ. CXC Status Report/CUC

  3. Items from January 02 CUC • “Occasionally a few datasets are delivered well beyond the mean lag of 7 days. We suggest that each OBSID has a built-in alarm so that the appropriate scientists are informed when an OBSID has been unduly delayed.” The archive group has installed a script which checks the automated processing (AP) status for observations which have been in the queue for a week or more. The duty scientist is notified of all such observations. In addition DS has implemented monthly manual checks of the AP status tables for observations which have been received but for which processing has not completed. • “We recommend that more channels be opened by which either the Director or the CXC Outreach office can learn of potentially interesting results. Possibilities include charging CUC members to take some responsibility for identifying potentially appropriate science results and sensitizing PIs of successful large proposals of this issue.” The CXC has reached agreement on a plan with MSFC and HQ to increase the resources in the Education and Public Outreach area. An important task for the new resources will be to address this issue. CXC Status Report/CUC

  4. Operations • Nominal Spring 2002 eclipse season. • Patch up-linked to increase glitch counters and mitigate EPHIN hardware failure glitch counter trips of SCS 107 (second occurrence on 4/2/02 however EPHIN hardware is nominal and cause traced to subtle timing condition). • Successful test of bright earth constraint limitation. Expected to lead to reduction of the 20 degree constraint yielding more flexible scheduling. • 6 executions of SCS 107 due to high solar activity, 1 assessed as due to EPHIN hardware failure glitch. • No ACIS CTI degradation above expectations. • Anomalies • None. • Hosted a number of visits or discussions with other mission teams: • NGST, SIRTF, Kepler, SIM, HST (July).
