Interoperability VS Health Information Exchange Interoperability Health Info Exchange Clinicians have access to information and ability to add to that information Information doesn’t HAVE to be kept locally ie. one record/per person A push AND pull of information. ie. Cloud computing • Systems “speaking” to each other. • Information is still kept locally • ie. Multiple records/per person • Usually only a pull of information, not a push of information • Example: ePrescribing Interoperability & Health Information Exchange

  6. Benefits of HIE • More scalable • Easier to change systems • Resources can focus on security issues • Improves communication and coordination between regional health care organizations • Easier access for patients to their health data Interoperability & Health Information Exchange

Challenges of HIE • Communication and coordination is sometimes tricky or highly political • Requires a major shift in security policies and procedures which could take years in legislation • Clinicians have a huge push back for patient access to their own data Interoperability & Health Information Exchange

  8. Interoperability has 3 main aspects: technical, semantic & clinical. • Interoperability is a necessary but no sufficient condition for HIE success. • HIE requires the coordination and collaboration of all participating organizations for success.   9. Instead of a blog assignment this week, we are going to do an in class assignment on Thursday. To prepare: • Pick one of the three cases from the posted readings • Find other information online about the case studies and bring them to class In class: • You will discuss the case study in groups • Present the case study by answering questions in class Case Studies Interoperability & Health Information Exchange

  10. To design a research project based on a health informatics issue discussed in class. What I’m looking for: 1. A developed research question that is supported by literature 2. A well designed study including appropriate methodology 3. Incorporation of a funding opportunity (just one paragraph outlining where you are going to get the money for the research – must be an ACTUAL funding opportunity) 4. At least 3000 words 5. ASA/APA Referencing (at least 20 sources) Outlines can be reviewed, just set up a time *Your readings are a good place to start! Research Proposal Due: Friday, April 6, 2012 @ Noon! There are 3 case studies: • Case Study 1: eCHN • Case Study 2: Keystone HIE • Case Study 3: Jersey HIE Answer the questions on the next slide and be prepared to discuss the answers within your group and then present in front of the class. You have 50 minutes to complete followed by a 5 minute presentation. Case Study Options Interoperability & Health Information Exchange

  13. Focus on: • Briefly describe the HIE. • What was the main driver behind the development of an HIE for this group? • Who is the HIE meant to serve? (A hospital, a specialty, a region?) • What are the benefits already realized? • What potential challenges do you see the HIE facing in the future? • Could the HIE be integrated here in SSM? Would it be beneficial? OR 6. If the HIE is already integrated here, could it be expanded to serve other groups? Case Study Questions Interoperability & Health Information Exchange
