  2. Bishop = Episkopos (ἐπίσκοπος) • 1.) An overseer • a. A man charged with the duty of seeing that things to be done by others are done rightly, any curator; guardian, or superintendent. • b. The superintendent, elder, or overseer of a Christian Church.

  3. A Bishop must be…(v2) Blameless= Not open to censure, Irreproachable The Husband of one wife Vigilant =Abstaining from immoderate use of wine, temperate Sober= sound mind, self-controlled Of good behavior= well arranged, seemly, modest Given to hospitality = Generous to guests Apt to Teach

  4. A Bishop must be…(v3) Not given to wine No striker= not contentious, quarrelsome, or pugnacious Not greedy of filthy lucre= base gain or money Patient Not a brawler= abstaining form fighting Not covertness= greedy, avaricious

  5. A Bishop must be…(v4-5) One that rules well his own house having his children in subjection with all gravity (reverence, respect, etc.) If a man can’t even rule his own house well, how is he able to take care of the house of God?

  6. A Bishop must be…(v6-7) Not a novice=newly planted, a new convert Not being easily puffed up with pride= not haughty Lest he fall into the condemnation of the Devil Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without: lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the Devil

Deacon= Diakonos (διάκονος) • Also translated “Minister” and “Servant” • One who executes the commands of another, especially of a master, a servant, attendant, minister • The servant of a king • A deacon, one who, by virtue of the office assigned to him by the church, cares for the poor and has charge of and distributes the money collected for their use • A waiter, one who serves food and drink

A Deacon must be…(v8-9, 12) Likewise deacons must be: Grave = August, Honorable, Venerated of Character, Honest, Venerable, Revered Not doubt- tongued Not given to much wine Not greedy of filthy lucre= base gain or money Holding the mystery o the faith in a pure conscience The Husband of one Wife Ruling their children and their houses well

  9. A Deacon must be…(v10) And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless

  10. The Wife of a Deacon must be…(v11) Even so, the wives of deacons must be Grave= August, Honorable, Venerated of Character, Honest, Venerable, Revered Not slanderous= slanderous, False Accusers Sober= Temperate, abstaining form wine Faithful in all things

  11. These things write I unto thee… that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God…

  12. The Leader is the one who serves.The Servant is the one who leads.
