Author • Louis Sachar was born in East Meadow, New York on March 20, 1954 and lived there until third grade. Louis’s first book was“Sideways Stories From Wayside School”. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and majored in Economics. Another book Louis wrote is called “Small Steps” . After writing “Holes”, he won a National Book Award and was awarded the Newbery Medal.
Stanley "Caveman” Yelnats • Stanley Yelnats is an obese teenager that has been accused of stealing a professional baseball player’s shoes. • He had a choice of going to jail or he could go to a juvenile center called Camp Green Lake. • Stanley always thought he was at the wrong place at the wrong time because his family was afflicted with an old Gypsy curse, because his great-great-grandfather who lived in Latvia, failed to carry a crippled Gypsy woman up a mountain in exchange for the pig she had given him. • His nickname at Camp Green Lake is Caveman. • He was innocent of stealing the sneakers. • He was hurt by a shovel that Squid hit him with.
Hector “Zero” Zeroni • Zero's real name is Hector Zeroni, but he has been called Zero for most of his life. • He has been homeless for most of his life, and his mother abandoned (or lost) him when he was still small. • Zero has not had much of an education so he does not know how to read or write, despite all the adversity that he has faced, Zero knows that he is smart and he has a sense of standing up for himself. • Zero steals because he has lived on the streets for most of his life. He never talks and always has a scowled look on his face. • Zero actually stole the sneakers. • Zero’s great-great- grandmother is Madame Zeroni.
Rex “X-Ray” Washburn • X-Ray is the unofficial head of the group of boys in tent D at Camp Green Lake. • X-Ray decides that Stanley will be called Caveman and fixes the order of the line for water. • X-Ray maintains his position as the leader of the boys even though he is one of the smallest boys and can barely see without his glasses. • He convinces Stanley to give him the gold tube that Stanley finds in the dirt so that he can have the day off instead of Stanley. • X-Ray is able to maintain his position at the head of the group through a system of rewards and allies.
Alan “Squid” • Squid is another boy in Tent D. • He is as tough as X-Ray, although he often follows X-Ray's directions. • Squid often taunts Stanley about receiving letters from, and writing to, his mother. • When Stanley is allowed to leave the camp, Squid reveals that he also cares about his mother and he asks Stanley to call her and tell her that heis sorry. • Alan’s nickname is Squid.
