  1. Football Unit Plan By: Skye Smith

  2. Main Objectives • This unit plan is made to help students learn how to play football. • They will learn the importance of teamwork. • By using this unit plan, the students will learn how to play football.

  3. Analyze Learners • Students will range from ages 14-18. • Students should also have a basic idea of how to play football.

  4. State Objectives • This unit plan focuses on seven state objectives. The West Virginia Content and Standard Objectives (CSOs) are: • PE.HS.1.1 demonstrate competency/proficiency in team sports. • PE.HS.1.2 demonstrate competency/proficiency in individual and dual sports/activities.

  5. State Objectives (cont.) • PE.HS.1.3 demonstrate competency/proficiency in non-competitive individual activities. • PE.HS.1.5 demonstrate competency/proficiency in dance and rhythmic activities. • PE.HS.2.1 identify discipline specific skills (e.g., head down, high finish, hips toward target for a golf swing).

  6. State Objectives (cont.) • PE.HS.5.1 identify potential dangers of physical activity and describe how to minimize associated risks. • 21C.O.9-12.1.LS1 Student can efficiently browse, search and navigate online to access relevant information, evaluates information based on credibility, social, economic, political and/or ethical issues, and presents findings clearly and persuasively using a range of technology tools and media.

  7. Select Media & Material • The students will need the following materials for this unit plan: • Footballs • Flag Football Belts • Cones • Handouts with Football Terminology • Proper clothing (shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, sport shorts, regular shoes) • Web Access

  8. Select Media & Material (cont.) • As we progress in the unit plan I will give the students handouts and web sites to visit. • These web sites will help the students with the unit plan.

  9. Select Media & Material (cont.) • A couple of the web sites are: • First Base Sports: -This website has a football glossary for the students to look up terms. • Westlake High School Physical Education: This website gives students directions on how to play flag football.

  10. Utilize Media & Material • This unit plan will be very student oriented because most of the time will be spent on the students actually playing football. • Each day will consist of most class participation.

  11. Utilize Media & Material • Each day will be planned as followed: • Day One: I plan on having an assessment day the first day of class. This assessment day will be a free day for my students so that way I can observe how much they know about this particular sport. I will give them all the material they need to play flag football and then I will tell them to go play a game of flag football. If most of them know what they are doing then I only have to briefly explain certain terms or certain things like how to score. I will also give the students a basic handout.

  12. Utilize Media & Material (cont.) • Day Two: What I do this day depends completely on the day before, if I feel like the students know a lot about football then I will briefly explain the following. I will teach the students different terms about football and explain different techniques. I will use the resources from the first base sports website. At the end of the day, I will give the students a worksheet about the terms that will be due the next day.

  13. Utilize Media & Material (cont.) • Day Three: Students will learn different passing techniques from PE Central Website. There will be five different stations that rotate every ten minutes: four of the stations will be a passing activity and then I will be at one of the stations showing the students how to play defense. • Day Four and Five: I plan to set up the stations again from the day before, but there will only be three different stations. Then towards the end of class, I will put the students into separate teams to teach them how to play the actual game of flag football. I will show them how to play by using the game described on the Westlake High School Physical Education website.

  14. Utilize Media & Material (cont.) • Day Six through Nine: On the six day, teams will be chosen by the students. After the teams are selected, I will set up tournament brackets for each team. It will be a double elimination tournament. Then on days seven through nine the teams will compete in the tournament. • Day Ten: On this day, I plan to take the students to the computer lab so they can do some research on football. This paper will be due a week from its assigned class day.

  15. Require Learner Participation • All of this unit plan is basically hands-on to keep the students interested and involved. • Also to keep them involved I will give bonus points to students who work hard during class. • At the end of the unit plan, each student will be required to do a research paper.

  16. Evaluate & Revise • PE.HS.1.1-This will be graded by how well the students can play when on a football team. •  PE.HS.1.2 &PE.HS.1.3- This will be graded by how well the student performs during individual activities. •  PE.HS.1.5- Knowledge of other activities athletes participate in to help them with their skills such as dance. •  PE.HS.2.1- Participation and knowledge of when to be discipline. •  PE.HS.5.1-Knowledge of the risks of physical activity. •  21C.O.9-12.1.LS1-Research paper about football.
