  2. What is an Archetype? Basic plot, character, image or idea that recurs in different versions of a story. Ex) wicked stepmother, godmother in fairytales or the heroic quest in a myth, epic, or tragedy.

Types of Archetypes Situational situations that occur over and over in different versions of a story (in all Cinderella stories, the girl is an orphan or stepchild that is mistreated, but saved by a fairy godmother figure) Symbolic Symbols that occur over and over in different versions of a story (in all creation stories, a ‘void’ or water is the only thing that exists at first, until creation) Character Character types/personalities that occur over and over in different versions of a story (most myths/folktales/fairytales have a good figure that is heroic and an evil figure)
