  1. Naviance Scholarship Search Advisory 2012-2013

  2. Free Money • If you needed $500, $1000, or more who would be able to give you that money? • Would they be able to give you that money several times a year for each semester/quarter of college? • If your answer is “NO” then you will need to apply for Financial Aid your senior year and RIGHT NOW you need to start applying for scholarships!!!

  3. What is a scholarship?? • Aperson or organization gives you money for something you've done or can do, such as getting top grades, being a basketball star, or showing exceptional leadership in the community. • Its an application about yourself • It’s FREE college $$ OR earning money for writing. • You have to work at it, and you only get paid if you do it right. • Its usually and application + an essay OR a project OR a video presentation, etc. All scholarships are different • Applying doesn't cost you anything except the price of postage and a few hours of work. So, as long as you meet the qualifications, you have no good reason not to apply for as many scholarships and grants as you can possibly manage.

  4. Is there only one type of scholarship?? • Merit-based:Based on a student's academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities, and often factor in an applicant's extracurricular activities and community service record. • Need-based: Offered solely on the basis of financial need. You don't have to be the best student in the class. • Student-specific: Qualify by gender, race, religion, family and medical history, or many other student-specific factors. • Career-specific:Based on students who plan to pursue a specific field of study. • College-specific: College-specific scholarships are offered by individual colleges and universities to highly qualified applicants. “full-ride to the college, or for a reduced rate of tuition”
