Isaiah A Prophet to Judah Before the Exile • Isaiah – “Yahweh is salvation” • Ministry – 739-681 BC 58 years • Kings of Judah in Jerusalem • Uzziah 790-739 BC • Jotham 750-732 BC • Ahaz 735-715 BC • Hezekiah 715-686 BC • Married a prophetess and had two sons • Shear-jashub 7:3 • Maher-shalal-hash-baz 8:3 • Well-known prophecies • A son will be born of a virgin. 7:14 • The wolf will dwell with the lamb. 11:6 • The suffering of Messiah 53:1-12 • Was a martyr – being sawed asunder by King Manasseh – Hebrews 11:37

Gloom and Darkness • Isaiah 9:1 • Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. • The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali were in the Northern Kingdom, israel. • Israel, became an Asslyrian province under Tiglath-Pileser III in 732 BC. • Israel fell down under the Empire of Assyria in 722 BC. • The Southern Kingdom, Judah, fell down under the Empire of Babylon in 586 BC.

The Coming Deliverer • Messiah’s First Coming – Isaiah 9:6 • For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:… • Jesus Christ was born of a virgin, Mary. • Messiah’s Second Coming – Isaiah 9:6 • …and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. • Jesus Christ will rule Israel and the world for 1000 years in future.

  5. Jesus Christ the Coming Messiah • 1. The Messiah was born a Child. • 2. The Messiah will rule over God’s people and the world. • 3. The Messiah will have four descriptive names. • Wonderful • Counsellor • The Mighty God • The Everlasting Father • The Prince of Peace • The Messiah, seated in David’s throne, will have an eternal rule of peace and justice.

  6. The Wise Men • Matthew 2:1-2 • 1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, • 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. • “Where is he that is born King of the Jews?”

The Shepherds • Luke 2:8 • 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. • 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. • 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. • 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. • 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. • 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, • 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
