  2. 1 in 3 teens will experience some form of violence in a relationship. • Every 6seconds a woman is battered by a boyfriend or husband. • Every 14 minutes a woman is murdered by a boyfriend or husband.

  3. Dating Violence: • Is on the rise. Dating violence includes all forms of abuse- physical, emotional, and sexual.

  4. Signs of an unhealthy dating relationship: • Expressions of jealousy. • Attempts to control a partner’s behavior. • Use of insults or put-downs to manipulate a partner. • Use of guilt to manipulate a partner.

  5. Date & Acquaintance Rape: • Date rape occurs when one person in a dating relationship forces the other person to participate in sexual intercourse. • Acquaintance rape occurs when someone known casually or considered a friend forces a person to have sexual intercourse.

  6. Why should you be concerned? • Because rape is a serious crime!! • Most people imagine the typical rapist as a psychotic stranger lurking in an alley. In fact, many rapes are committed by a seemingly “nice guy”. • No matter who the rapist is, rape is an act of violence. It can cause great emotional & physical pain.

  7. Myth Only young & beautiful people get raped. People wearing “sexy” clothes are asking to be raped. Most rapes occur in dangerous places Most rapes are committed by a stranger. Fact Rape victims include people of all ages & appearances. No one asks to be hurt this way. Most rapes occur in the home or automobile. Most rapes occur by someone known to the victim.   8. Myth Most rapes occur because the rapist is sexually starved. It is common for a woman to falsely accuse a man of rape Fact Most rapes occur because the rapist has a desire to overpower % humiliate someone else.   10. How do I tell the bad guys from the good? • Hostility toward women • Possessive, extremely jealous • Domineering personality • Anger control problems • Resent women in authority positions. • Expects relationships to be in their terms. “Self Centered” • Drug or alcohol misuse

  11. Alcohol, Drugs & Date Rape: • Research shows that alcohol use is involved in as many as two-thirds of date-rape cases involving teens & college students. • In the past 10 years or so, the drugs GHB & Rohypnol, sometimes known as “date rape drugs” have been common in rape cases.

  12. Strategies for Preventing Date Rape: • Do not go out with a person whom you do not know well. • Date people who are close to your own age. • Set clear sexual boundaries & communicate them assertively. • Avoid being completely alone with your date. • Do not use alcohol or drugs. Avoid places where alcohol or drugs may be present. • Watch your food & drink.

  13. Strategies cont.. • Have your own transportation. • Go on dates with other couples at first. • Don’t let strangers know where you live. • Take an equal role in relationships.

  14. If you are raped: • Call law enforcement officials immediately • Seek medical attention immediately • Do not shower or bathe • Seek counseling • Get tests for pregnancy, STD’s and HIV.

  15. How to help a friend who was raped. • Be supportive • Encourage action • Be reassuring • Offer shelter • Call the 24 hour rape crisis hotline at (714) 831-9110
