  2. Compare and Contrast • Compare: To tell how items are similar or the same. • Contrast: To tell how items are different.

Organize Information • When comparing and contrasting items, it is often best to use some sore of organizer to sort out the details and to help with initial brainstorming. • Three-Column List: This organizer has you simply make three columns. 1st column-list items that the character has; 2nd column-list similarities between both characters; 3rd column-list items that this character. Example- Apple SimilaritiesOrange Red Round Orange Has smooth skin Has skin Has bumpy skin Has a stem Has seeds No stem No sections Fruit Has sections

  4. Informational Text • Within informational text, you may be asked to compare and contrast some of the following items: Author’s Purpose Author’s Point of View Methods of Appeal Description or Imagery Methods of Development Cause and/or Effects

  5. Strategy • When you encounter multiple-choice questions on the FCAT that ask you to compare and contrast ideas, you can use a simple strategy in order to answer the questions correctly. You must first go back to the passage and find the items being compared and/or contrasted. Then look at the choices of answers. As you find each in the passage, underline it. Use this strategy to eliminate answers that cannot be correct. Also, you may be able to use information from the other questions to help you find correct answers.
