  1. Active Albuterol or Placebo, Sham Acupuncture, or No Intervention in Asthma Wechsler et al. N Engl J Med 2011; 365:119-126

  2. The Placebo Effect • a positive change in health not attributable to medication or treatment • Treatment vs Placebo • Subjective vs objective outcomes • Does placebo affect disease course (if so how?)? • Asthma

  3. The study • Randomised, double-blind* crossover study • 4 possibilities • Inhaler with bronchodilator (albuterol) • Inhaler with placebo • Sham acupuncture needle • No Intervention • Given on 4 seperate occasions 3-7 days apart • Lung function tests and self-reported improvements in breathlessness *double-blind inhalers; single-blind acupuncture; unblinded no intervention

  4. Discussion • Study Design • Conclusions • Does this tell us anything new about the placebo effect? • Or about asthma? • Should more studies look at subjective as well as objective evidence when evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment?
