  1. The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) A New Assessment Model March 2, 2011

  2. What does a college and career ready 5th grader look like?

  3. Mary Kay AshCosmetics Henry FordAutomobile Bill GatesMicrosoft Martin Luther King, Jr.Civil Rights Leader Mark ZuckerbergFace book Teddy RooseveltPresident

  4. STAAR Design Attributes(Focus, Clarity, Depth)Elementary Mathematics, Reading, Writing and Science

  5. Standards Readiness Standards Supporting Standards

  6. To Increase Rigor STAAR Will Assess • content and skills at greater depth • high level of cognitive complexity • more than one student expectation in an item • focused student expectation multiple times in more complex ways • more rigorous items thereby overall test difficulty

  7. STAAR Science

  8. The Blueprint

  9. Investigation & Reasoning Skills

  10. Sample Item The drawing shows a model of the Earth, moon, and sun system made from foam balls. What is one way to make this model more accurate? A Use wooden blocks instead of foam balls B* Make the sun larger than the Earth and the moon smaller C Move the sun closer to the Earth D Change the order of the foam balls to be moon, sun, Earth 10

  11. CurriculumConnection

  12. STAAR Mathematics

  13. STAAR Mathematics Readiness Standards & Supporting Standards Worked backwards from Algebra II Standards are connected 13

  14. Reporting Category 1: 4.4(E) The student is expected to use division to solve problems (no more than one-digit divisors and three-digit dividends without technology).

  15. STAAR Blueprint Reporting Categories: Numbers, Operations, and Quantitative Reasoning Patterns, Relationships, and Algebraic Reasoning Geometry and Spatial Reasoning Measurement Probability and Statistics 15

  16. STAAR Underlying Processes and Mathematical Tools (Process Skills) • Will be assessed differently • Will be assessed in context, not in isolation • Will be assessed in a more integrated and authentic manner 16

  17. STAAR Underlying Processes and Mathematical Tools (Process Skills) • Will not be listed under a separate reporting category • Will be incorporated into at least 75% of the test questions • Will be reported along with the content skills under the other reporting categories 17

  18. Question from Grade 3 Mathematics Melissa had some money in her purse when she went to the mall with her mother. She spent $5 on a book. Then her mother gave her $10. After Melissa spent $2 on a snack, she had $23 in her purse. How much money did Melissa have in her purse when she first went to the mall? Mark your answer. A $26 C* $20 B $17 D $6 This test question addresses: Content: 3.3B Process: 3.14C

  19. STAAR Griddable Questions • A type of open-ended question used for science and mathematics assessments • Purpose is to provide students opportunities to derive answers independently without being influenced by answer choices provided with the questions 19

  20. STAAR Griddable Questions • Grades 3- 5 Math • Will have 3 griddable questions • Will use same grid as is currently used on TAKS

  21. PISD Curriculum & STAAR Skills and Concepts in Context Mathematical Processes TEKS are Clustered Multi-tasking Multiple Strategies & Representations Mathematical Communication

  22. Next Steps • Review curriculum for scope and sequence of readiness and supporting standards. • Review and align resources. • Review and adjust local assessments with the new standards and level of rigor.

  23. STAAR Reading

  24. Genres Assessed Literary Strand • Fiction • Literary Nonfiction • Poetry • Drama • Assessed beginning at 4th grade • Media Literacy • Embedded Readiness Genre Supporting Genre Supporting Genre Supporting Genre

  25. Genres Assessed Informational Strand • Expository • Persuasive • Assessed beginning at 5th grade • Procedural • Embedded • Media Literacy • Embedded Readiness Genre Supporting Genre

  26. Reading Blueprint ReportingCategory 1 Understanding Across Genres Analysis Across Genres (4th & 5th) Reporting Category 2 Understanding / Analysis of Literary Texts Reporting Category 3 Understanding / Analysis of Informational Texts

  27. General Information:Test Length • Word count attached to overall test rather that to individual pieces, as in TAKS • Maximum word count increases from grade to grade • Number of pieces included on a test can vary from year to year • Number of questions vary, depending on selection length

  28. General Information • Paired selections begin at grade 4 • Paired selections can mix strands and genres • Assessment will emphasize critical analysis rather than literal understanding • Items will have a higher cognitive complexity to match the ELAR/R TEKS

  29. STAAR Writing

  30. STAAR Assessment Design Grade 4 • Two Day Writing Test • Day 1 - ½ Multiple Choice & One Composition • Day 2 - ½ Multiple Choice & One Composition

  31. Revision & Editing • Revision and editing assessed separately • 32% of multiple-choice score from revision (9 items) • 68% of score from editing (19 items) • Revision is focused on effectiveness and strengthening/improving various aspects of a piece of writing • Editing is focused on correctness (conventions) Example of Grade 4 revision stem: David would like to improve his story by adding a strong concluding sentenced after sentence 28. Which of these would be the BEST sentence to add?

  32. CompositionStudents will write two one-page compositions addressing different types of writing. • Personal Narrative: • Write about important personal experiences • Expository: • Create brief compositions that establish a central idea in a topic sentence, contain a concluding statement, and include supporting sentence with simple facts, details, and explanations

  33. Expository Prompt • Read • Statement or picture • Think • Statement about what to think about or consider (Example: “What are all the reasons that people might eat unhealthy foods?”) • Write • “Write an essay about….” • Be sure to ….

  34. Writing Rubrics A rubric is being developed for each writing type. • Literary • Expository • Persuasive • Analytic • Personal Narrative

  35. Writing Blueprint Reporting Category 1 Composition Reporting Category 2 Revision Reporting Category 3 Editing
