  10. C.  Rationale for Expanding DE College Enrollment and Graduation Rates

  11. C.  Rationale for Expanding DE (continued) Lack of financial and social support is the major reason students leave school without completing a degree.  • Most students leave college because they are working to support themselves and going to school at the same time.  • Young people who fail to finish college are often going it alone financially.  • Among students who don’t graduate, the college selection process is far more limited and often seems happenstance and uninformed. • Students who leave college realize that a diploma is an asset, but they may not fully recognize the impact dropping out of school will have on their future.

  12. C.  Rationale for Expanding DE (continued) Of the Virginia CTE completers who graduated in 2010, over 4,500 had taken dual enrollment courses, giving them a distinct advantage in completing an associate's degree.  Dual enrollment is increasing in high schools across the state, and when the CTE completer data are released later this fall, it is expected that this number will rise.  Source: CTEtrailblazers.org. Student Financial Woes Hurt Graduation Rates. Dual Enrollment Can Help.

  13. D.  Recommendations (continued) 1.  More dual enrollment courses countywide. 2.  Support for teachers through professional development      and graduate coursework. 3.  New pathways and course      offerings.

  14. D.  Recommendations Expand the GCTAA Summer 2012 Academy to offer... • Architecture/Construction Management • Automotive Technology • CyberSecurity • Digital Photography • Entrepreneurship • Web-Based Computer Applications

  15. E.  Timeline / Schedule

  16. Summary Dual Enrollment programs provide significant college experiences and college credits to current APS students. Dual Enrollment programs provide instructors that have important pedagogical skills for high school students. Dual Enrollment programs are currently in all high schools and high school programs.
