  2. Announcements • We understand scheduling conflicts. Feel free to politely exit the room early if necessary. Please log out of your workstation. • We encourage you to ask questions, but if you find that you need further assistance, additional resources are available. Ask us after the workshop ends.

  3. Objectives • Learn about the menu bar • Learn about the Dock • Learn how to use the Finder • Learn how to access and use the Folders • Learn about system preferences • Learn about accessibility • Learn some of the shortcuts for Mac

  4. Your Computer’s Desktop

  5. The Menu Bar • At the top of your screen is the menu bar. • The leftmost menu is the Apple menu, designated by an Apple icon. • The Menu bar has a number of different features.

  6. Access the U Drive • Access your files on campus from any location • Its completely free! Demonstration + Activity 1 Connect to the U Drive (pg. 5)

  7. The Dock • By default, the Dock is at the bottom of the screen. • To open an application, click its icon. Demonstration + Activity 2 & 3 Add and Remove item from the Dock (pg. 8)

  8. The Finder • Finder windows are the windows that open when you double-click an icon for folder or for a device such as the hard disk, or when you click the Finder icon in the Dock Demonstration + Activity 4 Change a view and set its options (pg. 9)

  9. The Desktop • Most of the work you do on the desktop is in the Finder windows, or in windows for applications you use, such as Mail or the Safari web browser • You can work directly on the desktop

  10. The Downloads Folder • Default location for any software or files that you can download from the Internet • An icon for the Downloads folder is located in the Dock

  11. Folder • All items on your computer – including your documents, pictures, music files, applications, and more – are organized in folders Demonstration + Activity 5 Create a new folder (pg. 10)

  12. Moving items into a Folder • To put items in a folder, drag its icon to the folder • To keep an item in its original location and put a copy in a new folder, hold down the Option key while you drag the item Demonstration + Activity 6 Move items into a Folder (pg. 10)

  13. System Preferences • Use these preferences to set up user accounts on your computer, update your software, select your startup disk, and set the time and date Demonstration + Activity 7 Change a setting on your computer (pg. 11)

  14. X Menu • X Menu adds one or more global menus to the right side of the menu bar • They give you access to your preferred applications, folders, documents, files, and snippets Demonstration

  15. Dashboard and Widgets • Dashboard is a collection of small programs that let you quickly do a wide variety of tasks such as checking stock prices, finding local or global weather, looking up words in the dictionary and more Demonstration

  16. Installing Dashboard Widgets • If the widget you need isn’t already on your computer, you can install additional widgets • You must be connected to the internet to install additional widgets Demonstration + Activity 8 & 9 Install and Remove Dashboard widget (pg. 13)

  17. Activity Monitor • You can keep an eye on your computer’s performance by using the Activity Monitor application to monitor your computer’s processor activity, hard disk usage, memory, and network activity Demonstration + Activity 10 Open the Activity Monitor (pg. 17)

  18. Shortcuts for Mac • Mac has a large amount of keyboard shortcuts that make doing basic and some advanced functions easier Demonstration

  20. VoiceOver • VoiceOver is a built-in-screen reader that describes aloud what appears on the computer screen, and speaks the text in documents, webpages, and windows Demonstration

Universal Access • Mac OS X provides various system preferences you can set to make it easier to use your computer or work in alternative ways if you have difficulty with hearing, vision, or mobility • Universal Access allows you to do a number of activities Demonstration + Activity 11 Open Universal Access preferences

  22. Safari e-Books @ Library • Go to library website and click advanced search • Enter a Search Term: “Mac” • Select “Electronic Bk” for Material Type and click submit. • Click on a search result and click “Connect to this resource online” • Safari Books Online will display content
