  7. …uhh, well it just sort of happened • No Constitutional mention of political parties • Washington warned about the “baneful” effects of party • Yet party politics is at the very center of American Government

  8. What kind of party is this? • Democrat (D) • Liberal -Not limited to or by established, traditional attitudes, views, or dogmas. • Republican (R) • Conservative- Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change.

Loose Construction: Justifying the creation of new laws, policies, or actions by arguing there are implied powers in the Constitution. “necessary and proper” clause Strict Construction: Belief that government only has powers that are literally mentioned in the Constitution. Wait…We can do that?

  14. Domestic Unrest:Whiskey Rebellion • Democrat-Republicans • These people are fighting against taxes from a strong gov’t, sound familiar? • Federalist • These people are a threat to tear apart the nation.

  15. Political Unrest:Alien and Sedition Acts • 2nd president:John Adams • Federalist crackdown – Alien and Sedition Acts. • VA and KY Resolutions set precedent for future nullification debates.

  17. Work in Pairs. Take an issue, work sheet. Read your party’s position on an issue. Complete the “So Basically:____________” Explain your party’s position to your partner. Then construct a political buggy-stickers that reflect your parties’ point of view! BE Creative! Activity: Political Buggy-stickers!
