Progress with Key Transport Targets • Traffic in Cambridge -1.3% Reduction per year in City Centre - On Target -Stabilise Traffic entering & leaving - On Target Cambridge on radial routes • Bus Patronage – Cambridge radials - Ahead of Target • 20% increase 1999-2003 • Park and Ride -1 Million passengers/year - Achieved • Infrastructure Deficit £1 BN for Transport - but big challenges ahead

Transport Policy-Key Features • Promote sustainable travel and integration between land use and transport • Promoting Area Transport and Travel Plans • High Quality Public Transport – Rapid Transit • Managing Demand for Car Travel • Improving Bus and Community Transport • Encouraging Walking and Cycling • Transport Investment Priorities • Improving Rail services • Encouraging sustainable Freight and Freight Interchanges • Air Services

  10. Cambridge Sub-Region Transport Infrastructure • Cambridge -Rapid Transit, Chesterton Station, improved road, cycle and pedestrian access to new developments. Safer travel and disabled access. • Green Belt – local improvements for cycle, bus and pedestrian access • RT access from City Centre to Trumpington, Addenbrooke’s and Airport • Access road, Hauxton Road to Clay Farm & Addenbrooke’s • Access road to A14 from Airport, pus other access roads • New Settlement –RT & cycle route to Cambridge and St Ives/ Huntingdon, improved road access to A14, plus parallel roads. • Market Towns, Rural Centres - local transport improvements from Market Town Strategies, improved links to Cambridge on key corridors

Delivering the Strategy • Early Start Essential, speed up Planning Process- with Districts and others • Government Role with Funding (LTP, HA, SRA) and Private Sector • Bid for Rapid Transit submitted by County Council • Stakeholder Partnering, working with other service and Infrastructure Providers • Encouraging a further Shift of Mode • Winning Hearts & Minds

Local Transport Plan • Review in 2003, following - CHUMMS - Draft Structure Plan • Will include key proposals - Rapid Transit - A14 highway schemes - Key Corridors- Rail, RT, Bus & Highway - A428 and other Trunk Road Schemes - Bus priorities and service improvements, Interchanges - Rail Schemes, e.g Chesterton Station - Cycling and Walking Schemes - New local highway schemes for development and safety

Timetable for Delivery • SP Timetable, - EIP Report by Feb. 2003, Adoption by Autumn 2003 • District Local Plan Timetable –a key/major process, - Overlap with SP process, complete by 2005 - Master Planning to overlap with Local Plan process • Rapid Transit (2006/7) • A428 and A14 Trunk Road Schemes(2006-2011) • New settlement (2006 to 2016+) • Development in Cambridge ongoing - E.g. Southern Fringe Master Planning

Message for “Futures” • Support the Development Strategy • Developments will contain housing for essential workers • Transport Infrastructure is key but, - Recognise need for Change of Attitudes towards the Car - Recognise need for Deliverability - Recognise Realism of Likely Investment Levels
