  1. Why Windows and Doors Should Always be Energy Efficient In the modern age of home renovation and design, we are always striving for the most energy efficient and effective ways to improve a home. You always want your windows and doors to be energy efficient because you can greatly reduce your energy bills, keep your home safe, and be more comfortable in your home. Windows Energy efficient windows are ones that let in a significant amount of sunlight during the day, so you don’t need to use electricity to adequately light your home. Sunlight also brings in heat during those chilly winter mornings, so you don’t need to turn on the heater. Heating and light energy are some of the costliest portions of your electricity bill, especially during the winter. In order to windows to be truly energy efficient, they must be able to close completely without leaking air in or out of the home. These windows might have weather strips or inspected regularly for leakage. If you notice a slight draft near a window or have trouble keeping the house warm after using the heater for an extended period of time, you should check your windows for cracks in the glass or sealant. Cracks in sealant can be fixed easily with caulk, but if you notice major damages, it might be time to replace them completely. When installing new windows, you can specifically request energy efficient windows. Although you might be worried about added costs, you save so much money on lower energy bills that you’ll only be saving money. Doors Outside facing entry doors also run the risk of letting in warm air in the summer and cold air in the winter. Older doors are often made of wood which is poorly insulated, and they tend to have gaps between the edges of the door and the door frame. Wood can warp easily, so even if your front door was perfectly airtight when you bought your home, it might not be that way a few years down the line. Better options include metal or fiberglass doors. They offer better insulation and are less likely to swell or shrink over time. You want to find a door that includes a weather-strip at the bottom of the door (sometimes along the whole edge of the door) because weather strips seal the gaps along the edges of a door without damaging the door frame or flooring. When installing a new front or back door, you also want to consider the effects energy efficient windows. You could choose to opt for a door with glass panels or windows that can offer the same heat and light benefits of windows. Generally, these windows are not openable, so you don’t need to worry about air leakage.

  2. Not only do energy efficient windows and doors reduce electricity bills, but you can be sure that moisture and insects won’t creep into your home through crevices around these entryways. Make the right decision and replace all of your windows and outside facing doors with energy efficient alternatives! Stop by one of our showrooms to learn more about our products.
