  2. Pandemic vs. Epidemic Epidemic rapid spread of a disease/illness in a region Pandemic rapid spread over a wide geographic area as in a worldwide outbreak.

  3. Pandemic Influenza Plan Plan Purpose • Procedures for mitigating consequences of an influenza pandemic • Define the roles, responsibilities, and actions of key stakeholders • Describe the role of KCHD in coordinating a local response to an influenza pandemic.

Interpandemic Period Phase 1 – No new virus subtype in humans - Low Risk Phase 2 – Circulating animal influenza virus subtype - Low Risk Pandemic Alert Period Phase 3 – Human infection but no human-to-human spread -- Low Risk Phase 4 – Limited human-to-human spread -- Moderate Risk Phase 5 – Localized human-to-human spread -- Substantial Pandemic Risk Pandemic Period Phase 6 -- Increased and sustained transmission in general population Postpandemic Period Return to Interpandemic Period (Phase 1) Pandemic Phases

Business Preparedness Develop a Plan • Keep phone lists of key employees and customers with you. • Designate one remote number for recording messages for employees • Provide the number to all employees. • Arrange for programmable call forwarding for main business line(s). • Leave keys and alarm code(s) with at least one other employee. • Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio with a tone alert feature. • Stock a supply of the goods, materials and equipment. • Discuss business continuity insurance with your insurance agent. • Post Strategies for stopping the spread of germs at work. • Encourage sick employees to stay home. • Encourage employees to receive flu shots every fall.

  6. Stopping the Spread of Germs at work How Germs Spread • Flu and colds spread from person to person when an infected person coughs or sneezes. How to Stop the spread of Germs • Cover mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough • Clan hands often • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth • Stay home when ill & check with a doctor when needed • Practice other good health habits
