TSC 230: Course Objectives. To introduce students to a number of research methodologies that they may be called upon to use in a professional setting. To produce a report, based on a research question formulated by the student and appropriately focused for a specific audience and purpose.

Report Options (all analytical) • Problem Solving Report (problem/solution) • Informative Report (information/recommendation) • Feasibility Report • Investigative Report • Report on an Experiment • Usability Report • Case Study Report
Stages of Production • Preliminary Research • Research Proposal • Progress Report • Research Report
Preliminary Research • Read together directions for research report. • Let students see some examples of past reports. • Brainstorm and informally discuss possible research questions. • Refine research question. • Complete annotated bibliography after library workshops. • Present preliminary research informally to the class. • Further refine question if necessary. • Submit question.
Information Literacy Skills • Comprehension: How well can I summarize the material? • Application: How does it relate to my research question? • Evaluation: How useful is it? • Synthesis: How can I integrate it into my final report?
Assessment • Each student gets 5-10 minutes of class time to present his or her “new and improved” research question. Other students in the class can pose questions or make comments that will confirm the soundness of the question or point up what still needs some work. • The student then submits an index card with the research question clearly spelled out.
