Advisory Committee of CERN Users • http://cern.ch/ph-dep-ACCU/ • ACCU is the forum for discussion between the CERN Management and the representatives of CERN Users to review the practical means taken by CERN for the work of Users of the Laboratory. • Catherine Vander Velde replaces Francesco Navarria as the new chairman • Michael Hauschild replaces Chris Onions as secretary • Rohlf Heuer represents directly CERN management • Committee membership is one appointed representative from each member state and 2 representatives from non-member states (formally by the DG) ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta

  3. ACCU Meetings In Past Year • Dec.9, 2009 (86th meeting) • First meeting in LHC physics era! • March 10, 2010 (87th meeting) • June 9, 2010 (88th meeting) • Code of conduct presented, formally approved shortly thereafter • Sept.8, 2010 (89th meeting) • Presentation of a hostel survey amongst delegates • Agendas and detailed meeting minutes: • http://indico.cern.ch/categoryDisplay.py?categId=1058 ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta

  4. Visa issues: Protocole d’Accueil • New French requirements for users from the US, and other non-member states for which a visa has not normally been required, who come to CERN to work for short stays (<90 days): Requested to have a Protocole d’Accueil • This and other visa info: • http://cdsweb.cern.ch/journal/CERNBulletin/2010/38/Official%20News/1291960?ln=en • Contact: • CMS: Yasemin Uzunefe Yazgan: Yazgan@cern.ch • ATLAS: Connie.Potter@cern.ch • Takes just a few days to get from authorities • The Protocole d'accueil covers only the duration of the stay in question. A new one must be requested for each new stay. However, it also can be done for a period of one year provided your visits do not exceed 90 days. ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta

  6. CERN Code of Conduct • A framework of common standards of conduct based on CERN values applicable to all CERN contributors • Document online, along with FAQ: • https://hr-info.web.cern.ch/hr-info/codeofconduct.asp • Initiated by HR Dept. on request of DG and on behalf of groups like ACCU • Consultation with 9 “focus groups” of 82 participants • Submitted to Council and became effective July 1 • An Ombudsman also has been appointed by the DG: Vincent Vuillemin (Ombuds@cern.ch) • Provide guidance with regard to the application and interpretation of the Code of Conduct • Offer confidential assistance for the informal resolution of interpersonal issues. 9. FAQ • https://hr-info.web.cern.ch/hr-info/coc_faq.asp ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta

  10. Hostels • New hours for reception: open to 1am • Web booking available • Increased 3 fold since May (2782 in August). • But still12K emails to reception! • One can now book 6 months in advance rather than 2 months. • Penalty for no-shows or late cancellations under consideration • Electronic long-term waiting list in development • Parking lot to be kept for hostel users • Hostel renovations have been in progress • B38 and B39 have significant work planned during XMAS break ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta

  11. Restaurant Facilities • Restaurant 1 extension supposed to be finished soon (expected end of October) • Restaurant 2 went through asbestos removal • Requesting feedback if the CERN Hostel online food store is a useful service. Only 10 users used it April-August. ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta

  12. Transportation • Shuttle service is available around all CERN sites and to/from airport (only shift service is 24/7) • https://espace.cern.ch/info-RegularShuttleService/default.aspx • New airport timetable proposed last June. Feedback requested on whether to keep schedule as it is or adopt new schedule. (better meshing with Bus Y times?) • My own experience from taking the shift shuttle (and observing others) and using the airport shuttle is that they are reliable • Bicycle fleet increased. Electric bikes to be introduced • Hertz car sharing pilot project: 19 cars at 9 CERN service points. Users can request an RFID card. • Users wishing to try the system should contact S. Auerbach in PH • Car pool / renting / sharing info: • http://gs-dep.web.cern.ch/gs-dep/groups/sem/ls/CarPool/default.htm ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta

  13. Day Care (“crèche”) • Current status • Meyrin crèche (Champs-Fréchets) already has its 20 CERN spots filled… • A St. Genis crèche is being set up, 1400 euro/month • Some investigation by CERN management on additional crèche possibilities • CERN users require greater flexibility than for the normal clientele of a crèche. • Users cannot commit for 12 months and start in September, for example. • CERN is currently working on the requirements for a specification: a minimum of 3 months with 10% drop-in is being considered. • Some options • Build something on CERN site • Public/private joint venture • Needs acceptance by CERN Finance committee and Council ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta

  14. Misc. • CERN summer student program: • Application and selection procedure was completely revamped for last summer to improve fairness (less “gaming” of system) • 6000 students to date • Library services: • Emphasis on online offerings now: e-journals, e-books • http://library.cern.ch , http://cdsweb.cern.ch/ • Proxy setup available from outside CERN: • http://library.web.cern.ch/library/Library/remote.html • Feedback requested for what paper journals not to place in storage: • http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1277692?ln=en • CERN stores will offer cycling helmets and fluorescent jackets ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta

  15. Misc., Cont’d • Users office: • You can renew your contract through EDH • Tram to CERN: • now scheduled for completion May’11 • CERN Global Network • The aim is to facilitate two-way knowledge exchange via a dedicated web site, to promote project opportunities, recruitment possibilities by linking job seekers and potential employers etc... • The key players are current and former members of CERN personnel, research institutes and universities and companies from CERN Member States. • Join! 17. Summary • Your CERN user concerns and input are very welcome! • Email: Darin.Acosta@cern.ch • Also, as a community, what further issues would you like to see addressed? • A lot of user input was addressed by the DG in the last year. Are there new concerns for 2011? • Next ACCU meeting: Dec. 8, 2010 ACCU Report ~ Darin Acosta
