  1. Homeworks #2 You need to buy an FTIR spectrometer for your solid state sample studies. There are two companies offering you a system, but they seem to differ quite a bit. One (A) is a very big spectrometer, with a long moving mirror pathlength and the other one (B) is quite a compact machine. (A) costs $500000 and (B) costs $10000. Which system would be best for you and why? In the simplest approximation give a formula for the ratio of the Stokes/anti-Stokes intensity of the same vibration. The system is in thermal equilibrium.

  2. Homeworks #2 What do you think about the “virtual” state in the scheme of Raman scattering? Do some research. – doesn’t contribute to score. You have very little amount of material that you need to learn as much about as possible. Which techniques would you use and in which order to examine your sample? What information do you expect to learn? How many vibrations does the C6H6 molecule have?
