  1. Communications, Networks and Internet

  2. Communication • This growth in communications technology has revolutionized the way the businesses work and keep in touch with staff and customers

  3. Method of communication • Telephone • Internet- Facebook, Twitter,Tumblr,Gmail • Skype • Flair • MSN • MySpace • Letter • Sonar • Sounds • Facial expression • ICQ • Text message • BBM • Mix it • OOVOO • Speech

  4. Network • A network consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to share resources e.g. exchange files, communicate • The computers on a network may be linked through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light beams • There are 2 types: WAN LAN

  5. Local area network (LAN) Supplies networking capability to a group of computers in close proximity to each other such as in an office building, a school, or a home • A LAN is useful for sharing resources like files, printers, games or other applications Advantages: • Software and data files can be shared • Users can work together on a single shared document • Users can communicate e.g. Messenger • Users can stream media, so they can view video and play audio • It saves time and money, to install the software on one main computer • You can share hardware devices and internet connection

  6. Types of LAN Client networks: • For those available to you to use Server networks Peer-to-peer networks: • Allows every computer to communicate directly with every other computer in the network • A user can access data from any computer on the network • Is limited to about 10 machines • Found in small businesses and departments

  7. Cabled LAN vs. Wireless lan • All computers and other peripheral devices on the network are attached to cables that transmit data between them • A network cable is required • Uses's a wireless link to connect to the network • Slower transmission speed • Has 3 sets of components: • Wireless points • Wireless interface cards • Routers

  8. Wide Area Network (wAN) • A large geographic area in a state, province or country • WANs often connect multiple smaller networks • The world's most popular WAN is the Internet • Information can be transmitted in many ways like high-speed telephone lines • The internet, school network, network of bank cash are WANs • LANs are often connected to WANs • WANs can be connected together using the internet, leased lines or satellite links • They are used by large companies, universities

  9. Components of a wan • Modem- is a Modulator-Demodulator • 1ST created to take digital signals from a computer and convert them to analogue so that they can be transmitted down a telephone line • Speed at which a modem operates will affect the download time of web pages and files • Data transmission is basically the transmission of data from on location to another for direct use or for further processing • Bandwidthdetermines the volume of data that can be transmitted in a given time

  10. What’s the internet • It’s a international network of networks that connects computers worldwide It consist of: • WWW- World Wide Web • Forums where people can seek help and advice about a topic • Research database used by universities and large companies • USENET- discussion groups about a specific subject from the latest boy band to favorite pets e.g. Google Groups • Email and Instant Messaging system • Nobody owns it • Its made up of individual networks that someone has put together and then linked to the internet • The internet is not the same as the WWW

  11. Connecting to the Internet-ISP • ISP- Internet Service Provider sells internet access to companies and individuals • It provides web servers which connect to the internet • Isp will provide its customers with a wide range of services…. • Bandwidth options • Email serviced • Web hosting • Online and telephone assistance

  12. Dial up or narrow band • The computer dials a phone number to connect to your ISP using a telephone line Broadband • Single cable that can provide cable TV, telephone and internet services • Available over a telephone line or cable or mobile telephone network

  13. Connecting to the internet- Hardware • Computer • Internal or external modem or similar device • Satellites • Fibre-optic cables • Radio wave

  14. Connecting to the internet-others • Internet address • Every device on the internet has a unique address that identifies it. This address is a number called the IP address • The IP address could be static(it remains the same every time you connect to the internet) or dynamic (a temporary address that changes each time you can connect to the Internet)

  15. Connecting to the internet- Software Browser software allows users to view and use the web pages on the internet: • An address bar • And navigation bar • A bookmark/favorites option • A search engine • A history button • A browser setting and internet options e.g. Filtering

  16. World Wide Web (WWW) • It’s a multimedia service that runs on the internet • The web consist of hypertext and hypermedia documents • This documents contain hyperlinks to other documents located on the same computer or an another computer in any part of the world • All the information that can be accessed via the internet is often called Cyberspace

  17. Components of a wan • The higher the bandwidth, the quicker the data will flow along the line…… • Web pages load quicker • Multimedia is downloaded faster • Internet connection is faster • Less network traffic • Quicker response time

  18. Broadband ISND: Integrated Services Digital Network • Supports video conferencing, faxes and voice applications • Users still must dial up • High speed digital transfer • Its permanently switched on

  19. Difference between stand-alone and workstation • A stand-alone PC works on its own • A workstation is connected to a network, you can freely share your files and databases to other PC.

  20. How can you tell whether a computer is networked to other computers • It allows you to send messages to a friend who is working on another computer • A message will tell you that you are entering a networked system when you logon • You have a choice to chose your printer • You have a file server

  21. A file server • Is a powerful computer that runs the network operating system and allows resources to be shared over the networked by other devices and computers connecting to it • These devices could include printers, disks,drives,CD-ROM drives, camera, etc • Must be kept in a cool temperature room • Has to be in a dust free room • Has to be in a secured room

  22. Print server • Coordinates printing on the network

  23. Bluetooth vs. Wi-Fi • 10 meters • Mobile phones, mouse, keyboards • Simple to use • Low cost • Developed in 1994 • Notebook, PC, desktop • 100 meters • More complex • High cost • Developed in 1991

  24. What can you do on the internet and the web • View web pages • Use a search engine to find pages you want • Send and receive email • Shop online (e-commerce) • Bank online (e-commerce) • Gamble online (e-commerce) • Access customers support • Software download and distribution • Access and discuss information via mailing lists, bulletin boards and new groups • Chat online • Video conferencing • Online radio • Web broadcast • Set up your own website or blog or wiki • Social networking
