This document outlines the procedure for the Health Assessment Criteria (HAC) when identifying cases where a “V” shape appears posteriorly and the vagina is visible anteriorly, without the Internal Anal Sphincter (IAS). The criteria specify that there should be no subdivision into HAC1 and HAC2. The Macroscopic Assessment Criteria (MAC) requires a round shape perpendicular to the canal, and the local assessment criteria (LAC) must include only the External Anal Sphincter (EAS). Always evaluate exposures unless the image quality is inadequate for identification.

Directions • HAC will be comprised of all cases where a “V” is identified posteriorly and vagina is seen anteriorly, there is no IAS • No subdivision of HAC1 and HAC2 • MAC must demonstrate a round shape perpendicular to the canal • LAC must be comprised solely of EAS • Exposures will vary – always read unless the image is so poor that you cannot identify location in canal and/or sphincter • Thinning does not mean tear
